Get ready for ‘plant rights.’

You just knew it was coming: At the request of the Swiss government, an ethics panel has weighed in on the “dignity” of plants and opined that the arbitrary killing of flora is morally wrong. This is no hoax. The concept of what could be called “plant rights” is being seriously debated.

an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years

Yeah, the operative word here is "claims". Its surprising that someone as stupid as this woman could actually live to be in her fifties in the first place...

Regardless the discussion, an eating disorder is just that. Those who have them are very good at excuses and cover stories.

I knew someone who claimed to be a vegetarian, but managed to sneak in the occasional hamburger.

First off, she's not from the US....and she's dead. I would predict she's going to be strictly limited two votes.

I too, live on sunlight. I do however, supplement with food and water.

I think people forget that plants are actually getting nutrients and water from the ground through their roots. They don’t live on sunlight ALONE.

Anybody else remember a story from the 80s about an Eastern mystic ( the Bhagwan ? ) who achieved worldwide notoriety claiming that he didn’t eat but it was revealed later that his assistants snuck him food?

I don’t know about the Bhagwan...as I recall he settled in Oregon and subsided on many things besides sunlight, including bevies of young women...

But I lived (briefly, thank God) in Boulder, Colorado during the early 80s, as you say, and at that time there was a group calling themselves The Breatharians, who supposedly were trying to live entirely “on the nutrients in the air.”

Even while I was still there the foolishness came to an abrupt end when one of the Bony Leader’s young followers found a secret refrigerator/freezer stashed with Snickers, popsicles and other decidely non-atmospheric foodstuffs...

Your mention of the Breatharians had me doing some further research. Other similar cases also turned out to be scams as one would expect.

Info on the man who claims he went without food or water for 70 years. Even if that’s possible it appears to be a rare condition.

I’m thinking she DID reach her goal - living the rest of her life on sunlight. And I heard it wasn’t starvation that did her in - but a Vitamin D overdose. ;)

The Undead are largely unconstrained, except by the bonds of amity. The Undead Thread is a peripatetic social event, to which all are invited. There are rules, which can be summarized as “Be fun, or sad, or completely off your rocker, but don’t be obnoxious.”

There isn’t enough sunlight that far north, everybody should know that this only works between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. That far north the diet must be supplemented by chewing on whale blubber.
