“Gayness Is Built Into Batman” (DC comics writer interviewed)
Bleeding Cool News ^ | Written on April 26, 2012 | by Rich Johnston

The new issue [of Playboy] features an interview with [current Batman comics writer] Grant Morrison, talking superheroes.

This is the kind of thing he says…

"Gayness is built into Batman. I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that’s why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn’t care—he’s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid."

This one always seemed a bit odd:

What is the psychological purpose behind Batman having/needing/recruiting a “Robin” - as he has had several?

Just as Bruce Wayne (Batman) will not use a gun - he would NEVER do anything to harm a child that age.

What is “that age”? About the age that Bruce was when he saw his parents gunned down.

So why does he want to see a child the same age as he was taking on armed men and beating them?

To torture himself that he could have/should have done SOMETHING - even as a young boy - to prevent his parents being killed.

He wants to prove that a “Boy Wonder” could take on and win against an armed man. To torture himself that he did nothing.

If anyone has a better take on the subject than this I have yet to hear it.

The costumes of most superheroes are pretty damned "Flamboyant"

But that's why I like 'em.

Ironically I find that a lot of young people who are into anime may not overtly call themselves conservatives but they beleive in a lot of the principles of conservatism and liberatianism. A lot of them eventually become conservatives or at the very least non-liberals.

I think it has to do with a LOT of animes NOT doing the 80’s-90’s cartoon morality that stresses the group think and “play nice and share with everyone” mentality, but Anime instead stresses individualism or the “romantic ronin samurai ideal” which is something completely different than the socialist brainwashing they get from the Hollyweird media.

I mean the first Bleach Arc was all about Ichigo going in challenging the system and essentially exposing the brainwashing Aizen did to the rest of Sopul Society. Even if Ichigo didn’t know that Aizen was behind it he knew it was WRONG and worked to FIGHT it.

A lot of Anime series use Heroes who are downright Awesome in terms of living embodiments of “Absolute Morality”.

Grown men writing and reading comic books seems a bit gay to me, but hey, each to his own.

I remember reading something years ago about the 1960s Batman TV show. The character of “Aunt Harriet” was written into the show because the network (ABC) did not like the idea of Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, and Alfred living together in a house with no women. They insisted that a female character be added to the regular cast. During the third season, the character of Batgirl was added, but I think that was done primarily to try to boost ratings, which were starting to sink at that point. ( I loved Batgirl!)

Being cynical and jaded, I always assumed Batman had to have a Robin for copyright/marketing purposes.

But seriously, your take is a fresh one and, quite honestly, brilliant. One that writers and moviemakers have, to my knowledge, missed.

What is the psychological purpose behind Batman having/needing/recruiting a “Robin” - as he has had several?

There have also been periods when the comic went back to fundamentals and Batman as the solo "Dark Knight" -- no Robin. Actually, Robin came along pretty early, but purists didn't really like him, especially after the campy 1960s television show.

The thing to understand is that most of these comic book characters had sidekicks, woman or boy or girl auxiliaries or assistants, or younger selves featured in stories or in their own comic book. So there was Superboy and Supergirl, Kid Flash, etc. Green Lantern and Green Arrow and Acquaman also had sidekicks. They helped to generate stories and sell comics and gave a "family feel" to comics at a time when that was thought to be a good thing.

Oddly enough, I view them as complimentary works.

I guess that is why I'm an engineer, not a philosopher.

They also made a character in Archie gay.

Yes. And they gave him the name of a friend of mine. Of course it was a coincidence.

These publishers and writers may own the copyright, but they have to realize they're the stewards of a tradition that,in some cases, goes back over half a century. They shouldn't mess with it.

Obama is the classic closet homosexual—unsure of his masculinity, desperate for offspring to hide his illness by forcing himself to impregnate a masculine woman, all the while fantasizing about Bobby Sherman, and then focusing on making sure queers like him dominate the political and social culture of normal America.
