'Supermoon' phenomena to occur Saturday night

If you take a look at the full moon this Saturday night and think it looks bigger than usual, you’ll be right.

The largest, brightest full moon of the year, nicknamed “supermoon” by astrologer Richard Nolle back in 1979, will happen when the moon is full on its closest approach to Earth. Scientists said it will be a mere 221,802 miles away, approximately 17,000 miles closer than usual.

The last supermoon happened in March 2011.

The supermoon promises higher than normal tides, but scientists say there should be no concern about the lunar event’s effects.

On NASA’s website, Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said, “The effects on Earth from a supermoon are minor, and according to the most detailed studies by terrestrial seismologists and volcanologists, the combination of the moon being at its closest to Earth in its orbit, and being in its 'full moon' configuration (relative to the Earth and sun), should not affect the internal energy balance of the Earth since there are lunar tides every day.

“The Earth has stored a tremendous amount of internal energy within its thin outer shell or crust, and the small differences in the tidal forces exerted by the moon (and sun) are not enough to fundamentally overcome the much larger forces within the planet due to convection (and other aspects of the internal energy balance that drives plate tectonics).

“Nonetheless, these supermoon times remind us of the effect of our 'Africa-sized' nearest neighbor on our lives, affecting ocean tides and contributing to many cultural aspects of our lives (as a visible aspect of how our planet is part of the solar system and space).”

The moon will appear most impressive when viewed when low on the horizon, creating an optical illusion that it is bigger than it actually is.

And Zombie supplies, or Anti-Zombie supplies, depending on which side you are on.

Well, I have noticed that the amount of “moonbattery” has been excessively high during the past few days.

Can we take much more of that?

It should be pretty easy for somebody with a little time to chart earthquake frequency/intensity vs. lunar orbit.

We don’t want to cause undo worry do we? ;)

Great! I’m tired of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart movies about vampires!

“The last supermoon happened in March 2011.”

The 9.0 Tohoku quake happened in in March of 2011!

"astrologer Richard Nolle "

Astrologer?

Astrologer?

For pity's sake, find an astronomer to quote, not a charlatan.

Speaking of charlatans, I see Giorgio Tsoukalos has officially jumped the shark with his “Ancient Aliens” series. It thought it was bad last week when he said the Mayan Calendar is a representation of the large Hadron collider but now he’s claiming that aliens killed the dinosaurs.

We're letting astrologers name things now?

our 'Africa-sized' nearest neighbor

The surface area of the moon is about 25% larger than Africa.

The diameter of the moon is less than half the distance from Cairo to Cape Town.

Two weeks later, on May 20th, there will be an annular eclipse of the sun that will be visible over the western third of the US.
