TMZ first reported that retired NFL star Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday morning, and that the police were investigating after his housekeeper found the NFL legend with a fatal shotgun wound to the chest. He was 43 years old.
The report has been confirmed by the North County Times:
Pro football great and Oceanside sports legend Junior Seau has apparently committed suicide, found by a housekeeper with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to multiple sources.
Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood said he learned of the death from police Chief Frank McCoy.
Police responded to Seau's home on The Strand on Wednesday after receiving a call about a reported suicide. The San Diego County medical examiner's office said an investigator was sent to the scene.

Prayers for Junior and his family. It’s especially sad when a great competitor turns out not equipped to transfer that drive to cope with real world problems.
So sad
Isn’t shooting yourself in the chest with a shotgun almost impossible?
It is sad to hear about Seau as well. I saw him in his prime when he was a Charger. He was a favorite of the locals, as he grew up in San Diego county before going to USC.
so very sad. Families of suicide victims never really get past the pain, and every new suicide we hear of only brings back memories of our own personal & painful event to present day. Not an alumni group anyone wants to belong to, that’s for sure. Prayers lifted for his family and for his eternal soul...
If you really want something and practice....
It could happen.
Not if he used his big toe.
Depends on the type of shotgun. One of the pistol grips might be short enough. He coulda used a string too.
I childhood friend used a shotgun and put it in his mouth.
According to Twitter, he left a suicide note.
He wanted his brain to be studied for possible damage due to NFL injuries.
Good ole’ MSM... it’s a typo. Self inflicted handgun wound.
I just tried it with my old Remington 12GA. Sit in a chair and use your toe. No problem.
and you were able to post after that? what kind of ammo did you use?
Condolences to you, pepsi_junkie, your family and your dad’s extended family and friends.
Condolences to Junior Seau’s family and friends.
99% this is concussion related...
Ala Dave Duerson. This is a big problem that is not going to go away for the NFL.
Hold muh beer....
“If Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, it is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life. Duerson shot himself in the chest on February 17, 2011 — the method used so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a trauma-induced disease common to NFL players and others who have received repeated blows to the head.”
Not with a defender model with an 18 inch barrel.
Or used a shotgun with a sawed-off barrel.
A short barrel or loooong fingers . . .
Did it hurt a lot?
Nasty.
I just went and ‘sized’ up my Mossberg defender with an 18 inch barrel.
No problemo.
He was a big guy though, could of probably done it with a full size shotgun.
It can end tomorrow. At least future problems. All the NFL needs to do is give the players back their leather headgear. But that won't do for the NFL. They might lose revenue if the game lost any bone crunching excitement.
Very sad to hear about Junior. He was such an intense player. And a great guy from what I've read of him.
Just making an observation.
apparently you weren't successful.
last time i heard the name junior seau, Rush Limbaugh was reporting that he'd driven his SUV over the side of a hill or something.
ding ding ding.

Rest in Peace, Junior, you were a helluva player..........
I would impose weight limits.....no more than 250 pounds, there was a time when a 300-pound player was unheard of...now they are not only over 300 pounds, but they are fast as well. That’s a bad combination.
It would take a VERY deliberate effort. Even with a pistol grip shotgun without a stock, it wouldn't be easy. Maybe the thing had a sawed off barrel...... (OR SOMEONE SHOT HIM)....
A Samoan dude! RIP Junior.
What is the incidence of concussions for rugby players? If it is lower than that of football players, that would be very telling.
Throughout his Chargers career, I recall he was good to the San Diego community and a first class player. I can't imagine the anguish his mother's going through.
If brain injury did cause major shifts in personality, as I've seen happen in stroke patients, I can understand why he'd want "out" before he couldn't recognize and control who he was and do so in a manner his brain could be preserved for study.
My guess is he did it this way to avoid a mangled head or face at his funeral....out of consideration to his family
Rugby is a very different sport. Large portions of what happens in an NFL play, perfectly legal with the rules stuff, is against the rules in rugby. They just don’t run at each other as much, there’s not as much emphasis on bringing people to the ground. Football is a collision sport, rugby gets some collisions but that’s really the point of football.
You missed.
See Dave Duerson, he wanted to be able to have them examine his brain so they can determine the level of damage from playing in the NFL, I suspect that was also Seau's motivation.
Nasty.
Just making an observation.
There seems to be a lot of better ways to go if you have some imagination. Ok, I am going to abandon thread before I start writing some really stupid stuff. I did like Junior Seau and this is sad news.
I just watched his mother speak during a press conference. I wept watching the pain this poor Mom exhibited. So sad.
Thanks very much for your kind words. He never suffered and he’s at peace now and we’re grateful for the extra time we got. Thanks again.
Seau’s personal problems became very public in October 2010 after he drove his SUV off a cliff hours after an arrest on a domestic violence charge.

Tragic, just tragic.
I've heard suicides following a broken relationship have a higher rate of chest/heart shots.
