TMZ first reported that retired NFL star Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday morning, and that the police were investigating after his housekeeper found the NFL legend with a fatal shotgun wound to the chest. He was 43 years old.

The report has been confirmed by the North County Times:

Pro football great and Oceanside sports legend Junior Seau has apparently committed suicide, found by a housekeeper with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to multiple sources.

Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood said he learned of the death from police Chief Frank McCoy.

Police responded to Seau's home on The Strand on Wednesday after receiving a call about a reported suicide. The San Diego County medical examiner's office said an investigator was sent to the scene.

I have never heard of shooting yourself in the chest.

See Dave Duerson, he wanted to be able to have them examine his brain so they can determine the level of damage from playing in the NFL, I suspect that was also Seau's motivation.

There seems to be a lot of better ways to go if you have some imagination. Ok, I am going to abandon thread before I start writing some really stupid stuff. I did like Junior Seau and this is sad news.

I just watched his mother speak during a press conference. I wept watching the pain this poor Mom exhibited. So sad.

Thanks very much for your kind words. He never suffered and he’s at peace now and we’re grateful for the extra time we got. Thanks again.

Seau’s personal problems became very public in October 2010 after he drove his SUV off a cliff hours after an arrest on a domestic violence charge.

I have never heard of shooting yourself in the chest. Seems weird to me? What a long painful death unless it was in the heart. My husband is a police office and he said he had only seen it once. 99% with fire arms he said were head shots.

I've heard suicides following a broken relationship have a higher rate of chest/heart shots.

"He wanted his brain to be studied for possible damage due to NFL injuries."

Seau is the second player to commit suicide recently. Ray Easterling killed himself too. He was a complainant in an NFL concussion lawsuit. The link below is to a story on it.

The NHL is also dealing with this, in the last off-season 3 current or former NHL players committed suicide.

Hadn’t heard about Duerson. I just posted a note regarding Ray Easterling’s suicide in April. Concussion related.

Not really. It is not easy, but entirely possible. Has been done many times. Usually the shot is to the face though.

Interesting that you mention the NHL. I was wondering what the rate of concussions in the NHL were before they wore helmets, compared to afterwards. I was born and raised in Rochester, NY, and in the 60's, used to go to the Amerks games (AHL). The players didn't wear helmets, and the goalies were without masks. That was back when Gerry Cheevers was their goalie, and Don Cherry played for them. At one of the games, Cheevers took a hit on the underside of his chin with a puck and had to have several stitches.

I found out several years ago that Tim Horton was a cousin of mine. He had passed away by then. Killed in a car accident on his way home from a game. Up until I started doing research on my mother's side of the family, I had never heard of him or the restaurant chain he was part of.

I can’t believe all you people! Lean against it and use a stick. DUH!

Sad way to go. He needed some help and didn’t get it from the NFL.
