dictionaries ad nauseam | 3 May 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

numen \NOO-min\, noun
Divine power, especially one who inhabits a particular object.

Example sentences:
This “liquid” flowing up his arm and out of the other was numen, the divine substance, the sacred spirit that lives in a certain place in the body and sustains us all.
-- Jonathan Carroll, White Apples

He was now fairly confident that a shrine, unlike a temple, would contain no resident numen.
-- Dave Duncan, Present Tense (Round Two of the Great Game)

Etymology:
Numen is derived from the Latin word nūmen meaning "a nod, command, or divine will or power."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

According to some environmentalists, the practice of fracking releases the numens that cause earthquakes, landslides and floods.

it’s not a pleasant feeling. i was in bed by 2. came in a little late bc i couldn’t face the 4:45 am alarm. worst of all worlds, no sleep and a loss. they were just all soooo exhausted i don’t know how they were even physically upright on the ice. i think Ryan Callahan had like 51 minutes of ice time. That’s like being on the ice for an ENTIRE GAME. i had visions of the game NEVER ENDING.

"Hello, Newman."

I was thinking of the character on "Seinfeld".

“I open the door that Barack keeps closed to his room and enter in a warm, private space pervaded by a mixture of smells that so strongly speak of his presence, his liveliness, his habits — running sweat, Brut spray deodorant, smoking, eating raisins, sleeping, breathing,” Cook wrote.

Yup, that is what MY diary sounded like when I was 22. Fan fiction.

Cook said when she told Obama she loved him, he responded: “Thank you.”

Well, that's better than "I love cake."

OK, if this had been me, my journal entry would have looked something like this.....

“Can you freaking believe it? I tell Barry I love him, and he responds with ‘thank you’. Thank you? Like I just brought him a freaking cup of coffee or something? I feel so humiliated, baring my soul, and for what? A THANK YOU? I do not need this self-absorbed jackass! What am I? A glutton for punishment?”

Nope, she gets all philosophical about how deep and in a shell he is. I don’t buy it.

Cook said when she told Obama she loved him, he responded: “Thank you.”

THIS line, however, is totally believable.
