I got out of the Army in 1962 and you expect me to remember how many people in a battalion. I am not sure I ever knew that but I sure as he** don't remember now. In out Medium Tank company we had 3 platoons, one headquarters platoon, Maintenance section(of which I was a part)and various command vehicles. 15 tanks in the three platoons(M48A1s and later M60s), 2 tanks in the Headquarters platoon. One tank retriever and one APC in the Maintenance section, several jeeps for the CO and EXO and one APC for the CO. One deuce and a half for general usage. 17 tanks, two APCs, One VTR, two jeeps and one Deuce and a half. 4 men per tank, two jeep drivers, two man crew on both APCs, two man crew on the VTR and two men for the Truck. about 10 men in the maintenance section altogether and about 15 in the headquarters. I am probably wrong about some of this but go ahead and figure out how many men to a battalion from those figures.
BTW, my unit was part of CCA, Elvis was stationed there part of the time I was there and he was in CCB or CCC, never could find out just which one he was in.
I have never been in the military tho I asked to be drafted during the Viet Nam period. I failed the physical due to a hearing loss. Never thought it would disqualify me tho I knew I had it.
I have always been a student of military history and have often been impressed with the quality of American soldiers, sailors, marines etc. Going all the way back to reading about a handful of U.S. Marines capturing some North African fortress back around 1800 through the Seals rescue of the Maersk, Alabama Captain.
I can recall my Father always referred to his WWII outfit by the Battalion number, not by company, platoon, division etc.
