SOUTH STRABANE, Pa., May 5 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania man said he recently found a live turtle his son carved his initials into 47 years ago.

Holland Cokeley, 85, was walking in the woods behind his South Strabane home with his neighbor's dog when the dog found the turtle, KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, reported Friday.

"I picked it up, and I thought, 'Oh geez, this is Jeff's turtle!'" said Cokeley. "It's been here for 47 years, and it still has the same markings on it!"

'Round here, box turtles are protected...and you'd probably be arrested and fined.

Box turtles? I can't imagine doing that...they are among the prettiest and sweetest critters in the woodlands. :(

47 years...That’s almost as long as massive alcoholic, 3rd world immigrant enabler and woman drowner Ted Kennedy was Senator.

They probably weren’t protected 40 years or so ago when the initials were carved in it.

“Harmless critters.”

I’m gonna’ give DainBramage the benefit of the doubt and say that he posted without thinking. We’ve all done that in the past.

If that’s not the case, then he’s got a serious ‘manhood’ issue to deal with.

Nobody will deny that they make easy “targets”, sitting out there on a log basking in the sun......for a ten year-old kid that just got his first .22 for his birthday, that is.

And yes I know its the same box turtle, my son decorated the edge of its shell with a silver sharpy marker the first year we found it.

Because in our stock tanks there are hundreds of turtles . You guys obviously didnt grow up in Texas. lol.

We actually shoot them when they pop thier heads up out of the water. Much harder to do than you think.

BS

Many years ago I worked on a large cattle ranch and we also had stock tanks. They were about 3’ high and made of corregated metal.

Climbing turtles? C’mon, my FRiend, we’re not that stupid. Besides that, I would think that the rotting carcasses of “...hundreds of turtles” would poison the well, so to speak.

I honestly can’t think of a reason I’d shoot a turtle.

They’re one of the good guys.

Its not like you shoot hundreds at once Ever try fishing and everything you throw out there gets eaten by turtles before a fish can get to it?

And there literally are hundreds of them. BTW what is a climbing turtle?

Those are snappers in the tanks- they are a pest species, and can be quite dangerous. Everybody shoots them. I once saw one in the middle of a road near a lake that was big enough to be a traffic hazard- and two teenage girls standing right by it wanting to help it. I pulled up and told them to get away from the thing before they lost some fingers or toes- and then called the cops to get animal control out there and dispose of the thing.

This article is about a box turtle- they are a harmless, helpful species, and nobody shoots them. In fact, if I see one in the road, I’ll pull over and put it off the road.

Well then, obviously you are unknowing about tortoises and turtles. Must be one of them city slickers who come out in the country and shoot at everything.

The story is about tortoise “Box Turtle” not what those of in Texas know is the water turtle called a “slider”.

Secondly, its pretty lame to be shooting a rifle at a low angle on the water, the damn 22 can fly a mile from glancing off water surface. Want to shoot, go to a range, we don't need to be dodging your whizzing ricochet bullets every weekend!

In West Texas they call a pond a “stock tank”, even though lots of ranches do have a “steel or concrete tank” next to a windmill for cattle.
