Does this cover go too far? (Photo: Time.com)The headline reads, "Are You Mom enough?" But if that wasn't enough to fan the flames of the Mommy Wars, there's the photo that goes with it: A pretty young woman wearing skinny jeans and a tank top, nursing her nearly 4-year-old son. It's meant to illustrate a story about Dr. William Sears and attachment parenting but, given that there's more to that movement than extended breastfeeding, it seems as if Time magazine was going for sensationalism and shock value.
It's working.

Somebody’s going to be scarred for life.
I’m sorry but if you’re toilet trained and have teeth, you damn well better not be sucking on mommy’s booby anymore.
It’s not for the kid .
I thought SF outlawed happy meals?
Is someone else’s mommy’s booby OK?
Oh for Heaven’s sake!!!
Stick a fork in the country, it’s done!
We now have an illegal immigrant “president” who supports gay marriage and Time Magazine is printing covers showing what any reasonable adult would consider child pornography.
What’s next? Is there any hope at all?
TIME Magazine’s death-throes.
Ignore it, and it WILL soon go away.
Why does this even matter to people?
reminds me of that scene from Me, Myself, and Irene.
Will the sickness in America ever stop?
In ancient India, influenced by the belief that the longer a child nursed the longer he would live, mothers usually nursed their children as long as possible, often seven or even nine years sometimes. In Tsinghai, China, mothers observed in 1956 were still nursing for several years, five years not being unusual, or until another child was born. In Inner Mongolia in 1951, children nursed two or three years, nor was it rare that a six- or seven-year-old would want to nurse for a bit of reassurance.
I guess Time magazine thought it wasn’t getting enough attention lately.
The cover is another example of “Third World Behavior being held up as superior to First World Behavior”
This is child abuse. Not for the breastfeeding, but for having it on the cover of Time. You KNOW this picture is going to follow the kid around though school and into later life.
Move over, kid.
You should google breastfeeding websites if you really want to be shocked. Some people are breastfeeding kids into their teens. I think at some point it becomes a sexual thing for mom and sooner than you’d think for the kid too.
There was even a breastfeeding porn film from Spain a few years back where a 9-year old boy is literally shown searching the country for the perfect boob to feed from. He didn’t need a chair to go from boob to boob, with orgasmic looks on the womens faces.
???
Babies generally do not bite when they nurse, most have lots of teeth by one year old, breastfeeding is still beneficial for months after that time.
Good-for-nothing, classless pieces of crap.
Maybe it is time for the country to split. Let them ruin their country while ours prospers.
In Germany I seen many 7-8 year olds still with pacifiers and a few still on the teat.
Dogs and cats wean when the youngun’s start to teath.
I was a bottle baby so Im obsessed with most ALL breasts. My opinion probly doesnt count.
Next month? Bondage and S&M? Maybe it’ll bring the right kind of readers back to Time.
Certainly true that the mom is getting off on it. Kids will suck on a rock it you tell em it’s good.
Americans are such prudes when it comes to breast feeding. Many countries breast feed their children until they are five/school age. It’s the best nutrition many countries have for the children. That being said, I doubt they show off the process to the whole planet.
Betcha Hannah the mother of Samuel (see Bible) breast fed her young prophet-to-be until he was at least three or four.
What sickness? Breastfeeding in general or breastfeeding beyond what you think is acceptable?
Would she be a single mom by chance? If not, what does the Dad do when he comes in the room and sees Mom and Son having a suck fest?
That’s just funny.
Americans, we have all become one great big parody.
The question is not, WILL we survive as a nation, but SHOULD we survive?
You are so correct.
This gives me an ideer to place an ad on craigslist.
The liberals won’t be happy until they’ve destroyed every single part of traditional American values with their bizarre ways.
They love to parade this stuff in public to continue to lower the bar on everything.
Just like Barry Obama, who is their liberal messiah.
You’re slackin’, bro.
Get over it. The photo is rather incestuous, as Time meant it to be, but breastfeeding a child until he/she is four or five is NOT. It is just strange to the, to be honest, white, American culture, that people are shocked. Most women don’t breastfeed out in the open like that, they are discreet and use a blanket.
I might not be troubled by a normal breastfeeding on display. Gee, I was in the military, stationed overseas. It was quite an everyday, uneventful occurence. Many times I road in the back seat of an open taxi amidst the slurp, slurp, slurp of babies having din din.
But, this kid is almost a teenager!!! huh? This is just more of the gayafication of America, forcing children to remain children much longer than God or society planned for them.
No wonder they want 26-year-olds to stay on their parent’s insurance policy.
Does anyone else think that the boy knows exactly what he’s doing, and is even kind of smirking at the camera? I do.
Rush had a modifed cover on his website..
Time has stepped in it again. This time, bigtime.
My wife breast fed our son thru 18 months and probably close to 24 months. It pulled the post-pregnancy fat right off her. She lost probably 40 lbs. after the birth thru the following 18 months.
Living in Sweden, we see older and public breastfeeding all the time. Not at all unusual. For us it is normal.
What felt abnormal were the reactions we got when we stopped in Atlanta from Gothenburg headed to our other home in Naples, FL. My son was HUNGRY, at 2 months old, and we stopped at a bench to feed. The looks and comments, even though we covered up, were unbelievable.
An old woman stopped to lecture us that my wife should go into a bathroom stall. Old men clucked and shook their heads. A couple of mid 20’s black girls did the loud “you see dat...dat woman be milk’n dat boy....”
People would double take or stop in their tracks.
Hell, in Sweden nobody even covers up, just flop it right out there. And nobody cares!
I like the Swedish model MUCH better on this one!
Breastfeeding for nourishment is one thing, but that is obviously not the driving reason for the phenomenon in the United States, so why bring it up?
Public breastfeeding makes me feel uncomfortable. It’s not prudishness, or anything like that. I’m certainly not offended by the practice. I am afraid that, if I happen to look for more than a nano-second, I’ll be accused of harassment or some such. If the mother uses a modesty cloth, there’s no problem; but, when it’s all hanging out, that is a problem. If I’m in a public place — restaurant, airport waiting lounge, etc.; I’m forced to avoid looking at whole sectors of my surroundings. Consider the BC Human Rights pamphlet at the following link, to see why I feel this way: http://www.ag.gov.bc.ca/human-rights-protection/pdfs/SexDiscrimination&Harassment.pdf Notice that it’s simultaneously illegal to ask a breastfeeding woman to cover up; and also to look at her. Okay, it says “staring” — but, what exactly is “staring”. When does a glance become a stare? All I know is that I don’t want to chance being hauled in front of some kangaroo kourt tribunal for the offense of looking too long in the general direction of a breastfeeding woman. Therefore, I make a point of looking elsewhere, and moving if I can.
In europe, they did it to reduce the mother’s fertility. Some believe a lactating mother has a difficult time getting pregnant.
Yep, I do not get the prudish attitude against breastfeeding that many Americans have. The female breast is designed to make milk to feed the child.
How on earth do you know about all these bizarre films and websites relating to children?
LOL
Nothing wrong with it...also nothing wrong with a married couple having sex....as long as it’s done in private, that’s all.
I am not sure if the picture will follow him around at high school but perhaps a wet nurse may need to.
Oh good grief.
What is “normal breastfeeding”?
The child in the picture is three, that is ten years away from being a teenager.
Aah, yes they do (bite). And yes, it hurts.
LOL! I was thinking the same.
