2weeks rations equals 1days smokes

Posted on 05/10/2012 8:48:47 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

They had a sale on elbow pasta, aka macaroni. 75cents/lb...so I ran to the store with a pocket full of quarters and bought 8 pounds worth. I figure if I only ate macaroni it would last me 2 weeks. I might go back tomorrow and buy another 16 pounds of it. Or more.

In front of me at the checkout was a guy counting out nickels dimes and pennies for a pack of smokes. About 6 bucks...about the same amount I spent.

I couldn't help but notice the irony. Here it is the day before payday and he's down nearly to his last penny(literally) and he's spending it on one days worth of smokes. I've still got lots of quarters to spare(too much to carry in fact), and haven't even started using the smaller coins, and I choose to stock up on 2 weeks worth of rations.

I am soooo glad I don't smoke...or drink soda pop. One weeks worth of smokes and soda pop costs more than I spend on food and dogfood in a month.

They say misery loves company and I’m comforted I’m not the only one who goes for deals like that. I load up on Top Ramen and the cheapest tomato soups, and those big cans of pasta sauce at Wallmart of $1.

Too bad Mozerella is still $.

Remember the days of government cheese and butter?

Good for you on your tobacco.

I’ve been using Totally Vapor e-cigs for almost a year. I use a “Torpedo” and like it.

I would like to know how to make sweet wine using grape juice.

Years ago, I had dinner at a friend’s house and their dad showed me how he made his wine: a gallon jug, filled with grape juice, sugar and I think yeast-can’t recall. And the jug had a balloon on the top and when it inflated all the way, the wine was done.

Best tasting wine I ever had-I’m not a wine drinker-or much of a drinker for that matter, but it was so good I’ve never forgotten it.

Oh- and We haven’t been able to buy fresh produce all winter either. It’s killing me-I miss it so much; just don’t have the money.

My brother has five cases of cheap half pint Vodka bottles for bartering.

He says they’ll come in handy sometime in 2013.

Back on prohibition days “I am told by old timers” The sold a thing in markets called “Welch’s Bar”
It was basically yeast and sugar in a cake bar.

You just tossed it into the grape juice and voila!

I did EXACTLY that in college.
I don't recall the wine tasting all that good, though.

Moz isn't too hard to make if you can find milk on sale. It does take a little practice.

I generally make cheddar and cold smoke it, though. At least these days, with the kids grown and gone, I can keep it in the cheese/beer/sausage fridge long enough for it to actually age.

I'm not a wine maker. I do make the odd batch of black cherry Kool-aid sparkling wine for my neighbor. She loves it. But it takes forever to clean the traces of it out of my beer fermenters.

What kind of bread? Store bought?

You can actually eat good bread (handcrafted or home-made) and keep a decent weight if you eat it in moderation.

I make all of my own breads, and have for years.

.the guy with the smokes will do better than the guy with the macaroni

I've got a bunch of tobacco growing in the garden again this year. I'll bet I do ok.

And, in theory, if it were legal, I could easily convert some of my home-brew into something a little more potent. ;)

Green beans? I buy green beans from Costa Rica around November/December when the price falls. I can buy in bulk for as little as $2.00/lb. Prices are stupid high right now, but that's the season.

Green beans keep forever, and fresh roasted isn't difficult, it just takes a little practice. And the Tres Rios La Magnolia, freshly roasted and ground is really great this year.

Your are a very pure person. I almost want to say Christ-like. If I was your mommy, I would be very proud of you.

No. Roasted.....I’m lazy. But I have the coolest antique coffee roaster though....if I had to, I could roast over an open fire.

I go to NH, and in the little village we frequent, they have the funniest little grocery store that sells *outdated* food. I can find whole-bean packs...never the same brand...for $2-3...not too bad a price.

My fam thinks I’m nutz! :)
