GUINNESS DRINKERS...

Posted on 05/13/2012 2:00:03 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

Anyone notice Guinness tastes different? It seems to me when they stopped using the "widget" in their bottles, the flavor changed. It now has a slightly sour aftertaste.

A year ago or so I was asked to leave an irish pub when I got into a huge argument with the bartender. I told them their Guinness keg was crap after taking one sip of a draw and I told them I wanted my money back. They gave me my money and I was escorted out.

But now I tasted guinness(bottles) last friday for the first time in a year and realized its the same taste. Slightly sour aftertaste. They changed something. I can't drink it anymore.

Sorry about that (as I chug a cold Hamm’s for $0.40).

I usually make Guinness Stew yum, so aftertaste is not an issue. I had to stop drinking it when I fractured my spine and was put on a lot of meds.

Not a drinker, but I can also tell when my favorite brands change their recipes, and I hate it! I used to love Pringles, but a few years ago they changed something (I think it was their cooking process) and suddenly I couldn’t stand the taste OR the texture. Same with several other foods that I just don’t bother with anymore because they’re no good now.

I consider it motivation to learn how to make my own.

I wouldn;t be surprised if they changed the recipe to save money. They did that to Schlitz back in the early 70’s and ended the beer’s popularity. That used to be my favorite unitil they changed it. Drank it once more after I returned stateside. Never again.

I only drink it on tap. Bottles and cans have a different taste to me.

Murphy’s, brewed in Cork, has always been better than Guinness. Guinness brewed in Dublin has always been better than Guinness brewed in London.

Hey, those old timey american heavy lagers are pretty darn good for the money. Schlitz was my favorite of the old school american canned beer. Falstaff was my second pick. I can’t stand the standard “lite” beers...coors, miller, bud lite.

What, if anything, has changed about you? Not an idle question as some meds. change our sense of taste and our body chemistry.

Then again are any brewery workers missing?

Even worse, Johnnie Walker was going to close their historic production facility at Kilmarnock by the end of 2011.

Do you know if that travesty actually happened?

Do they still make guinness in ireland? I thought they quit. I also thought they quit making murphy’s keg beer and only make canned beer now. I did not care for murphy’s in the can.

“It seems to me when they stopped using the “widget” in their bottles, the flavor changed.”

The last time I had a Guinness was March 17th. It tasted just fine & there was a widget in every can.

BTW, I always enjoy a “Black & Tan” on St. Paddy's Day. Simply fill the glass half way with a light ale (Bass Ale is best for the symbolism). Then carefully pour Guinness over top — use a spoon bent back to break the fall of the Guinness, so it stays on top. (Heat a cheap plastic spoon handle a bit, then bend it back, so that the convex side is up.)

Do they still sell Hamm’s in those keg-shaped cans? Not a bad beer.

Right there with ya when it comes to anti-lite. My rules:

1.) Cold
2.) Cheap
3.) Not lite.
4.) Not necessarily in that order.

Never averse to a micro stout if someone else is buyin’.
