I recently read an article about exactly what happened. It was a CF equipment wise, lack of communication, and simply a tragic accident all due to the weather. I personally would have called it off until conditions improved.

Hug your meteorologist.

The Air Force commander and the Army commander both agree that it was the inadequate helicopter pilots, Carter should never have forced Navy (Beckwith succeeded in getting them dumped after they proved inadequate) and then Marine pilots onto Beckwith.

Watched “Count Down To D-Day” with Tom Selleck the other day. The young meteorologist officer caught hell from everyone, like it was all his fault the weather wouldn’t cooperate and he couldn’t give a better forecast.

Know it was only a movie, but thought it likely true that the high and mighty, even Ike, could be like that in times of stress.

There was only one meterologist who predicted the sandstoorm

the rest had to do with the failure to keep the aircraft sericeable

the Pilots had zero to do with the failure of the mission

There are several books on the raid of course, but if you are only going to read only one, then this one seems to best cover why the actual mission never took place, why it ended during the delivery process.

The Guts to Try: The Untold Story of the Iran Hostage Rescue Mission by the On-scene Desert Commander
http://www.amazon.com/The-Guts-Try-On-scene-Commander/dp/0517577143

“A powerful eyewitness account of the disastrous April 1980 attempt to rescue the American hostages in Tehran. Kyle, an expert in Special Operations and the officer in charge of the Air Force component, describes the mission from the earliest planning at the Pentagon through the subsequent rehearsals to the operation in Iran. Criticizing analyses by other participants, he offers his own diagnosis of five factors that contributed to the mission’s failure: the weather forecast, poor communications equipment, pilot decision error, restrictions on tactics, and a poor flight plan.”

Those restrictions came right from Carter. Thanks for the link.

ansel is a one trick pony

http://www.rescueattempt.com is my site

ALL services were invited to try out

the Army sent their best Night Vision trained pilots to the site, and they were impressed with what the Mariens were doing, and told them outright that they were never doing what the Marines wanted them to try, it was not even thought of yet by them

the air force guys all refused to sleep in tents, they demanded to be kept in a hotel on a perdiem basis

NONE of the Army pilots who tried out made the cut

one Navy pilot made it

NONE of the air force made it

All branches of the military sent enlisted to the crew tryouts, too. Navy and Marine made it, but not all the crews that were at yuma training.. one Army guy stood up and peed on a table inside a bar, he was gone the next day.

The Crew Chief of the last Bluebird aircraft to land with the bad hydraulic system told me he heard Beckwith refuse to put his men on an aircraft that was not 100% even though the pilot insisted he was capable to fly

general Vaught told me and one other Marine who was at Desert One , to my face, at breakfast April 26, 2010, that Beckwith was afraid to fly in helicopters and that what I was told by the crew chief was correct.

I have met with , dined with, and correspond reularly with men from the mission, and several of the former hostages know me by name and greet me when they see me with a firm handshake and a smile. one is a boyhood friend of a mutual friend.

Don’t listen to ansel. he repeats what formal stories are, he knows nothing of the real stories.

he also must have been frightened by a Marine at some point in his life. All he is out to do is trash the Marine Corps for things he never had the nerve to do himself.

I’m kind of surprised no AF spec ops guys made the cut.

back then, they either were already part of Delta or they just didnt exist.

because of the failure of the mission, JSOC was created

That is ANOTHER story Vaught told me, but I am waiting for him to pass before I tell that one :)

Otherwise, i WISH he would go on the record!

Good point about JSOC. They DID learn from their mistake(s). That’s rare these days. Seems like a tight ship.
