The Kleberg County Sheriff's Department believes robbery was the motive for 20-year-old Michael Lerma to allegedly beat to death 34-year-old Frank Wearden Jr. early Monday. The victim and the suspect are both from Riviera.
David Rosse says his nephew was a military veteran who was working to better himself by attending classes at Texas A&M Kingsville. "He was always the life of the party, having fun, enjoying family and friends," said Rosse.
Investigators say Wearden was last seen leaving a Kingsville nightclub in his Toyota pickup just after closing time. Investigators say someone living near County Road 1080 and County Road 2340 reported hearing screams in the area around 4:00am. Wearden's body was found in a nearby ditch around 2:30pm.
We're told Lerma was seen on surveillance video at a Stripes store in the victim's truck and tried to use the victim's credit cards. Police say Lerma used to work at the store.
When police showed up at the Lousiana Street where Lerma lives the victim's truck was in the driveway. Authorities questioned two men and a woman at the home, but only Lerma was arrested.
Lerma's roommate says he's only lived with him for a few weeks but already felt he could not trust him.
"He was too quiet he never talked to anybody he was back and forth, day and night. He was just a creepy dude," said David Sanchez.
Sanchez also described a gruesome crime scene that deputies explained to him. "He chopped him up with a machete and tied him up, that's nonsense, there is no reason to do all of that. Just for some money because you feel pressured. It's ridiculous. I believe the punishment he gets he deserves," Sanchez told us.
Lindsay Rios owns the house and says she took in Lerma when he had nowhere else to go. She says he was depressed after having to register as a sex offender just a few days earlier and not being able to see his children. Back in February he was convicted on a charge of sexual assault of a child. The roommates say the 20-year-old was dating a 15-year-old girl.
Rios told us she feels this might have pushed him over the edge, "He didn't seem happy about the way his probation was going, where he was going with his life his job, his lack of a job."
She says the night before the murder she had told Lerma that he was no longer welcome to live in her house
"I told him he had a little bit to leave and he just took off that night and when he came back he had the truck and he didn't seem upset anymore," said Rios.
Lerma is being held in the Kleberg County jail on a charge of capital murder. His bond is set at one million dollars.
I mean, really, I just let the anti-social, sex offender move into my house. And one of the roommates calls tying the guy up and killing him with a machete “nonsense”. Not exactly what I was thinking.
A prayer for the vet - that He is in Jesus’s arms and his family will make it until they are too someday.
Just think of all the children his life’s loss will have saved - and others like the 15 year old.
Exactly, modern ‘me first’ Obama clones. These are soul less zombies from the post-Christian African influx period.
