Despite it being Mother's Day, a large crowd packed the Waterfront and City Commons in downtown West Palm Beach on Sunday to celebrate the 64th Israel Independence Day.
The free "Israel in the City" event included programs for children and teens, a marketplace of Judaica, kosher food for sale, and entertainment by BSAMIM, with special guest Miss Emily, among a plethora of other festive activities.
"Israel in the City is a time for us to come together as a community to celebrate Israel and what it means to us to be connected with the Jewish State," said Shelly Friedman, director of The Ewa & Dan Abraham Project, one of the main sponsors of the event.
In addition to the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, other sponsors of Israel in the City included area synagogues and Jewish organizations.
A highlight of the event was an Israel and ethnic food booth hosted by a delegation of nine women cooks from the Jewish Agency's Nihohot Vete'amim [Aromas and Flavors] cooperative in Israel, who tempted celebrants with their "Jewish soul food." Passersby got an opportunity to sample Israeli kabobs, "real" falafel, couscous, and an assortment of exotic deserts.
The women, immigrants to Israel from the North African countries of Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, having been visiting Palm Beach County as part of the Partnership 2Gether, a collaborative effort to connect Israeli communities with Jewish communities around the world by sharing ideas, strengths, challenges and successes.
"The Jewish Soul Food Delegation from our Partnership 2Gether communities in Israel brought a meaningful connection and delicious taste of Israel to our event and its participants," Friedman noted.
