The eight baby ducks slipped into a sewer in front of their mama duck

A group of ducklings had a second chance at life after a Chicago man rescued them from a drain.

The eight baby ducks apparently fell in a sewer in front of a deli in south suburban Tinley Park, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Kurt Heersema stopped by Winston's market to grab a sandwich for lunch, when he noticed he a crowd looking down at the sewer. Instead of getting the sandwich, Herseema ended up jumping in to the rescue.

Heersema used a large pry bar to lift the sewer gate, squeezed down into the drain and rescued the ducklings, the Sun-Times reports.

Witnesses say the mother duck watched closely as her babies were being brought up to safety.

Herseema, from Orland Hills, told the Sun-Times this was not the first time he rescued baby ducks.

I felt so bad this morning. On I694 in the Twin Cites there was a mother duck and about 10 goslings stuck right against the concrete median in the middle of the freeway. I have no idea what happened to them.

Sorry, ducklings. I saw some goslings too but they weren’t in such dire straits.

God bless this guy for not just doing nothing. He gives a crap about little things others put no value on.

Ducks are great little creatures.

“I felt so bad this morning. On I694 in the Twin Cites there was a mother duck and about 10 goslings . . ..”

I rather hope they were ducklings. That aside, I once drove I-694 in a rather heavy rainfall and traffic flow, topped along with every other motorist to let a mama duck and her brood get across. So far as I know, the bumper tag one might have expected didn’t materialize.

You know, I did this exact thing in my backyard in suburban Chicago about 20 years ago when the ducks went plop plop down the grate behind mama duck as she walked over it. My wife was crying and pointing it out to me. That grate was heavy, but I got it off and went down to scoop them up. The mama duck couldn’t count very well, because after three or four of them she stopped circling and started taking off towards the retention pond. So, a neighbor came over and got the ducks from me, while my wife was keeping mom and the recovered ducks from taking off by standing in front of her. It was a pretty funny scene. I got all but one, who was too fast for his/her own good...
