A former resident is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on a felony alleging he intentionally stabbed a guinea pig named Diego with a steak knife.
According to Portsmouth Circuit Court records, Bobby Theriault, 25, of Lyman, Maine, committed the crime of animal cruelty on July 6, 2011. The complaint was filed with the court on April 12 and alleges Theriault “did purposely mutilate” the guinea pig by “sticking a steak knife into the right side of its body causing critical injuries.”
Theriault was a resident of 410 Sagamore Road in Rye at the time of the alleged incident, according to court records. On a police bail slip, he notified the court that he’d rented an apartment in Rye for two years but was a lifelong resident of Maine.
Following his arrest, Theriault was released after posting $500 cash bail.
Rye police could not be reached for comment Friday for details about the allegations.
Crimes against small mammals. They had that little creep in Denver the other day that got arrested for stealing hamsters from PetSmart, where he worked, and taking them home to torture them.
um.....well....was he white and it was a black guinea pig or something?

I don’t know. I’ll have to try and find some recent news. You know how the news is though. They go with it for a day or two, then you don’t hear a follow up.
I just don’t get it.
I’m currently injecting antibiotics into one of my snakes who has a respiratory infection and I feel like an EVIL CRUD because I know she doesn’t understand why I’m “hurting” her and she certainly can’t associate her improving health with those nasty pokes.
When we’re done, I just sit and cuddle her for a half hour, trying to let her know I really am sorry for the pain.
I just don’t get it.

Was it his? It’s okay to kill rabbits, mice, and other animals, but not a guinea pig?
I can't much relate to snakes as pets, but even with a snake I wouldn't want to see one be deliberately hurt or killed for no reason. I hope your pet gets over her illness soon.

Gosh, I’m so sorry.
I didn’t expect much from pet snakes either but they sure surprised me.
They’re very affectionate and ‘bond’ to their people.
If a stranger wants to hold one of mine, they’ll wiggle and stretch until they’ve gotten themseselves back on me and then peak out from under my hair, glaring at the ‘not mom’ who simply wanted to snuggle them.
They ‘beg’ to be taken out of their homes and held.
They’re just not at all what I expected.
It is pretty sickening...but people like you make things a little more pleasant.
Thank you for the condolence. Very neat about your snakes and your descriptions about their affection and personality. I don’t think they would be for me though. We just have the fuzzy kind of pets: 1 little dog, 4 cats, and 7 gerbils. You wouldn’t think that gerbils would have much of a personality, and compared to a dog they don’t, but they are all a tiny bit different. One is an avid exerciser. She’s crazy about keeping fit. A previous one that died, liked to be held while she nibbled paper. My middle child likes reptiles—lizards and such and all animals really. I can’t remember the name of the lizard that he was wanting to get.
This breaks my heart.
I understand the sentiment and have said much the same just recently on FR. I'm just glad we have other FReepers to talk with. I'd go just plain nuts or succumb to their kind of insanity if I didn't. Take care Salamander and keep being good to your pets.

I know! I’ve subscribed to some pet/dog page on Facebook and every day they post some horrible abuse story or two or three! New ones every day! Today was about some evil girl that killed her roommates kittens with her hands. I think with some of these cases, drugs are involved. It’s making young people evil and insane.
I can’t imagine hurting a baby animal,or any animal for that matter. I love animals so much and hearing about their mistreatment is like a knife in the heart.
I know how you feel. I don’t get it either.
We have had a rash of people setting animals on fire lately.

Guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils..all very fun to have.
I had all and even white rats for a while...very intelligent animals.
Yep, they are fun to watch drink.
And run in their wheels,especially the balls that can roll across the floor. Then there are the clear tubes that connect to make a tunnel of sorts.
I had gerbils!
They were cool, spazzy little bundles of kinetic energy.
I was just a youngster and liked to pretend they were tiny knagaroos.

I loved how they would sometimes stop whatever they were doing and really, *really* ~look~ at you.
It was so cute..and a bit unnerving....LOL

There aren’t many people in my ‘real life’ who are very much into critters.
That’s why I miss my gramma....she’s where I got it from.
She’s been gone almost 30 endless years.
I really miss her.
I can close my eyes and see her walking around the farm with a parade of chickens, cats, dogs, cows, ponies, ducks and guineas following her, plain as day.
Every lost or injured thing came to her house for help, same as they do mine, now.
The rest of the family got all her material stuff when she died but I inherited her best thing of all.
I had five of them and it always cracked me up when I went into their room.
They’d whistle at me like construction workers....LOL
There’s killing—and then there’s torture.
I have 4 fancy rats now.
[I used to have a rat rescue but that’s another *long* story]
I love to give them Cinnamon Toast Crunch because it looks like they’re eating tiny little sandwiches.
I have a Black Irish, a Black Berkshire, a Champagne and an Agouti.
They have a four story rat condo.
They all like to sleep up on the top deck which is about 7 feet off the floor.
Silly girls.
I don’t condone arresting anyone for killing their own guinea pig, mouse, rat, turtle.

Have you ever owned a tarantula? I held one at a pet store but I didn’t buy it. Tarantulas don’t scare me but the average house spider freaks me out.
I would LOVE to hold a baby animal and bottle feed it.

I’ve been on the rescuing end of several pre-weaned babies of different varieties. It’s pretty fulfilling...but a heck of a lot of work.
The baby mammals are tough...but the birds are tougher. Their little beaks are always open crying for more and more!
When they slaughter Livestock they are humane, not killing the animal in a slow tortuous manner to feed their psychotic desires.
Again I ask, do you condone torturing animals?

I do not condone money spent arresting people for killing a pet rodent. You need a sense of perspective. Nor do I condone imprisoning a citizen for killing a pet rodent.
I don’t have to condone his behavior, or making it a crime subject to arrest.
You could have just responded that you do not condone the torture of animals and that would have been the end of it. Not sure what your pontificating had to do with my question, but here we are.
I was courteous enough to respond to your inquiry if I had ever visited a Farm, like that had anything to do with someone torturing an animal to death for a cheap thrill.

Not playing, glad to answer your questions. Appreciate your farm info. I don’t like anyone harming an animal, but that doesn’t automatically mean I have to criminalize it. People do all kinds of things I hate but I wouldn’t lock them up. Spending money on animal “cruelty” prosecutions is a pet peeve of mine when we lack money for all kinds of things. Never would stab a guines pig but lock a guy up for it?
