Thanks, The Facebook Team
I’ve thought about doing the same thing - wayyy too much info out there - I like my privacy.
well, facebook is just one of many — if you have a bank account or loan, a gmail account, amazon account etc. your details are being used to ‘personalize’ offerings to you
Be very careful not to login through other sites or it won’t deactivate.
You had to write them by snail mail to get them kill it?
No. What I posted was their email response. I deactivated it and somewhere along the way I was given the option to permanently delete it.
I just went on and typed in “how to deactivate” and actually got the instructions on how to do it. And I, too, feel great! I told them my main reason was it’s a waste of time.
Maybe now a bunch of lefties will think I de-friended them. Which is basically what I did.
Facebook is nonsense.
Have you ever been a member?
No, never saw the need for it or had any interest in it.
Then you can’t really speak from experience, can you? I’m not saying you would like it if you were on it, or ever been on it, but how can you say something’s nonsense if you’ve never tried it? It’s like people who have never listened to Rush Limbaugh saying they can’t stand his show. My brother in law has been on FB and now he says he doesn’t like it. But at least he’s speaking from personal experience. But there are obviously thousands and thousands of people who love it, including me.
Never joined for just that reason. None of them....Twitter and the rest.
It's only purpose is social.
You don't have to experience something to know that it is wrong or foolish.
Also, I’ve never taken drugs but I hear that there are many who do so and love it.
I liked it a lot, simply because of the birthday remimders that popped up a week in advance by email. Then, family and friends started ragging me because I never responded to all the trivia BS they posted and I NEVER put up a 'status'.
I said to myself that I can fix this, and got the hell off. Do miss the reminders though. Oh well. No big deal.
If you don’t like it personally, so be it. But there is certainly nothing wrong with it. People having problems with it usually bring it on themselves. It’s a fun thing to do, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Stupid comparison. Drugs are illegal. Drugs are harmful to the human body. What I like to do is no more wrong than whatever hobby or pasttime that you like to do that I may not care for.
I never said Facebook was 'wrong' I said it had no useful function, it is purely social.
I don't have to experience something to know it is a waste of time.
Fine, I never said otherwise, it was you who jumped on me for saying I saw no useful function in it.
That is not why people are on it.
It may be a waste of time for you but it’s not for the hundreds of thousands of people who use it and enjoy it every day. Speak for yourself.
Facebook is fine.
Most of my friends are boring and I don’t have too many but I do occasionally hear news about friends and relatives that I would not otherwise know.
I don’t post anything I would be ashamed to put in the paper... altho I did just post that everytime I see Natalie Portman in a movie, I want to slap her.... but I digress.
Facebook is like everything else. You can use it or you can abuse it.
A lot of people brag about not owning a television. This just tells me that they don’t have the discipline to use television in a good way.
It is no more useful then video games.
And that is why I had no use for it.
Got anymore stupid remarks to make?
I was wondering when you would resort to name calling. No one said it was useful, just enjoyable. Obviously you have a problem with others enjoying themselves. Too bad you can’t.
I asked if you were going to say anything else stupid.
Maybe you need to spend less time on Facebook and more time reading.
Maybe you need to spend less time answering what you call “stupid” responses on FreeRepublic and more time doing something that you consider more worthwhile. Your arguments are now resorting to throwing insults around.
It shows your lack of knowledge of FB. Therefore you can’t really comment with any credibility. None of your comments have made any sense. The fact that you compared it to drug usage proves that. FB is no more of a liability to its users than those who spend time at the movies or watching TV. It’s just another form of entertainment. Sorry you feel you are superior to something that you know nothing about.
Don’t give FB real info. My town listed is a few thousand miles from where I live, same with other thing. And I change things occasionally.
I view FB as a big joke anyway.
My daughter has our dogs name for her name! Everyone knows who she is.
Clearly, you have a problem grasping principals.
Your claim to 'experience' being the guide to understanding the value of something was a false one, hence you could have inserted any word for 'drugs' that one would not need to experience to understand their uselessness.
FB is useless, it is simply social networking and is for bored, self absorbed people who want to think they are important because people are paying attention to them. So, I do know about it, and your defensive attitude on it shows I have struck a nerve.
And if you want to keep arguing about this, feel free I will be happy to continue to do so.

Correction-that should have read 'I have NOT thrown any insults'.
Also, I apologize for the double post, slow computer.
Your loss Saxie! Facebook is, like it or not, the most intellectually stimulating invention since Gutenberg.
If you’re already on FB, it’s too late. They’ll delete your profile, but not the gathered information.
Testy, aren’t we? I laughed when I read your post. It appears you are the bored, self-absorbed person who is grateful that someone is out there paying attention to you. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be spending so much idle time replying to another who you feel is a loser in life.
While FreeRepublic was down, you know what I was doing? I was on Facebook on the Freerepublic page talking to others on Freerepublic.(BTW, I told them what you said and they got a chuckle out of it just as I did.) Jim Rob, the founder of FR, the same FR in which you partake, was on FB letting us know the status of the technical glitches and when we could expect FR to come back up.
Military families who keep in touch with their loved ones overseas I suppose are bored and self-absorbed.
Let’s see, JimRob, Freerepublic, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, those in the military who use FB to keep in touch with family and friends back home, all have FB pages. All losers according to you. If I had to hang around “losers”, I can’t think of a better bunch to hang out with. So you see, you DON’T know what you’re talking about. Don’t join FB. We don’t want you. Since you think you’re so superior to everyone else, you can wallow in your misery and loneliness, but I have a great group of friends and I’m happy. Sorry if that bothers you, which it aparently does. I will not feed your ego any longer.
I did not initiate this discussion, you did.
If Facebook ended tomorrow, the world would take very little note, except for individuals such as yourself, who would have to find other means to keep themselves amused.
As I said, if you want to keep arguing about this, I will be right here to do so.
I see, so you are asserting Video games are useless? They have no redeeming value whatsoever?
“It’s only purpose is social.”
And FreeRepublic is...?
Prove it.
Also Facebook is way more than you anti-facebook/twitter snobs make it out to be.
Example: The Tea Party movement was organized on Facebook and Twitter and because of such it grew huge and powerful. Why? because it gives everyday people the power to organize and send a message to literally hundreds of millions of people and allows them to bypass the chokehold the MSM has on radio/tv.
Entrepreneurs are using these platforms tp get there products/services direct to customers who show interest in such things instead of the outdated mode of blindly throwing expensive commercials on TV and Radio they can target their message to an audience who actually wants to hear their message.
Independent Writers and Musicians use these platforms to promote their wares to people who show interest in their respective genres and by doing so on Facebook and Twitter they break the stranglehold the liberals have on Literature and Music through their control of Big Media. And now the independent Movie Makers are starting to do the same bypassing theaters and going direct to video and Internet with some really astonishing good work and mostly you will find such is way more profamily/conservative values than Hollyweird ever produced.
Oh and the bit about video games? Colleges and the military use them to teach complicated procedures and to simulate real life stressful situations to teach.
In fact the Air Force went all in on using video game type training tools when one young recruit blew away his colleagues in real flight training. How did he mange it? by playing flight simulator video games for most of his youth. BTW the Army recruiting centers are now built around video games. They have a host of terminals youngsters can use to immerse themselves in real life Combat situations to see which job in the Army they are interested in. They even have video game simulators on their recruiting pages.
Further Businesses are using video games to train employees and the Medical profession as well.
So when you see a kid sitting in front of his TV/computer and clicking away on his controller/keyboard he is in fact becoming proficient at interfacing with the training tools of the 21st century.
Yep. And now since you broke the contract with them they can charge as much $$ for your data as they can get to anyone that will pay.
Technology, including social media, serves a useful purpose. In reality, FreeRepublic is a social network. Go figure!
I am on FB and Twitter. Got my parents on FB and it wasn't long before my dad got connected with men he flew with in Vietnam. Best of all, a man who flew out of his based, in a different squadron but during the same time period, lives a few miles away. Finding him and meeting him added a lot to both heroes lives.
Yep, you really must stay away from the evil Facebook. /s
FB is a social tool, it has very little use in other areas.
The Teaparty could have found other venues.
There is nothing about FB that is not irreplaceable and that goes for twitter as well.
Internet websites and blogs broke the MSM monopoly on the news, not FB.
FR discusses news, FB is about social interaction.
Headline from a FR article.
FB is about social networking.
If it ended tomorrow there would be little loss of anything important, likewise for video games.
But this society has become so pleasure mad, just the thought that one of their 'toys' might be considered just that, a useless toy, ends them into a hissy fit.
Comparing it to the light bulb is simply utter nonsense.
Out of curiosity I started a FB account, and then I found out just how much it tracks you.
Thats a big no-no for OPSEC, that is should a person actually need to use that.
Problem is as good as FB is and could be its also a perfect touchy-feely tool for those with an agenda. Like a socialistic agenda. So I too feel perfectly comfortable deactivating the account, and its not easy, even just getting the info to eradicate FB is difficult.
Sorry charlie to those that that think FB is the social utopia of the future, I think its already been compromise to become a intel gathering tool.
