G.I. Joe won't be going into action on the big-screen this summer, after all.
The Hollywood Reporter says Paramount Pictures yanked its sequel "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from its June 29 release date and rescheduled the movie for March 29 next year.

I never heard of a Summer Blockbuster being moved like this. Wonder how much money Paramount blew already on marketing?

This makes no sense, no-how.
The production money has been spent. The marketing dollars have been spent, the post-production, editing, special effects and soundtrack are all done. This is money that has already been spent.
The release date is just a month away, time to reap some cash from all that expense ... and they are pulling it for a year? What are they thinking?

Why is it that everytime I see a story about a GI Joe remake I think some producer is remaking the Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith classic. Just hoping I guess.

GI Job might inflame those pro america types.
and/or
It may have a clearer field later.
and/or
it is good and they want to promote it more (and make toys for sale) OR it really stinks so they need less competition.
With battleship on screens it may be too much.

It’s a risky move, but they’re probably looking at the finite disposable incomes of the Summer action blockbuster having been significantly depleted with The Avengers and about to be totally depleted with Dark Knight Rises.
When I saw the release schedule for this Summer the first word that came to mind was “oversaturation”. There’s only so much entertainment revenue to go around, so a second/third tier, non-niche action flick like this doesn’t stand a chance. Better to delay to a safer release date next Spring.

Do you know what the plotline was? A man is in the Oval Office who is not an American citizen. He is a manchurian candidate who turns over the security of the USA to Cobra. GI Joe team is betrayed and many are killed. The survivors look to a legendary leader and the original joe Bruce Willis to lead them against this president and his Cobra goons.

The ‘excuse’ they are using is that they need the ‘additional time’ for 3D enhancements. That’s bullsh*t, of course.

I saw the trailer and it looked like someone had replaced the president with a Corba person and they were running the country like Obama....

Supposedly they’re going to go back and make it into a 3-D movie. It hasn’t been tracking well and they’re hoping that making it 3-D will help.

I would add that the plotline, that the US government had fallen under the control of a terrorist organization, requiring that the betrayed elite military unit seek to “start the ‘Second American Revolution’ by waging black operations against the Cobra that have taken control of the U.S government” might appeal just a BIT TOO MUCH to certain people to be allowed just before the election.

Perhaps it has a TEA party militia retaking DC, and trials held in Philly where the NBP and AG are punished like the Nazis at Nuremburg. George Zimmerman gets to pull the lever.
One can only fantasize about justice in America today.

It’s kind of a late move, but these moves do happen. Definitely bodes poorly for the test audience results that they moved it from the peak of blockbuster time to the march dead zone. Of course the first movie didn’t do that well, I was kind of shocked they made a sequel at all.

This is based on the almost modern “international team of counter terrorists” GI Joe, nothing pro any country about it.
It will have a clearer field, it’s in the dead zone.
Battleship won’t still be there, it’s tanking, it might be in the cheap seats that week but that’s it. Which could have a lot to do with them pulling GI Joe.

The Chinese have recently bought the AMC movie theater chain. I wonder if part of the decision came from the Chinese owners saying they were going to pass on showing it in any of their AMC theaters?

this plot is nothing like real life. the GI JOE unit would be killed in a helicopter accident. then the pres would take all the kudos of the men who took out the terrorist leader.
think about it, obooba is not bragging, he IS the only one still alive after that operation. So he has to blow his own horn. and the last person to do that was larry sinclaire.

Seriously? Not even a Christmas release? Did it suck that badly that it got pulled at this late date? That's a lot of retooling time. It's one thing if they were just worried about the competition.
Maybe they were worried about how high the bar got set by "Battleship".
