A funny series of communications exchanged between a neighbor who put up a bright spot light shining into his neighbors bedroom window and very witty neighbor with a sense of humor.

Another reason why we live in the boondocks with no neighbors in sight.

I’m sure he’s a liberal and a jerk—only city-bred liberals are so panicked by woodland wildlife that they have to install enormous lights suitable for illuminating the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. On the other hand, he’s right that going onto somebody else’s property and messing with their stuff is no joke at all, no matter how charming and witty the Aussie is.

I love it!

Years ago, as a graduate student at the university of South Carolina, I found myself in a very similar situation when I rented a small apartment in a nice looking neighborhood. I moved in January and everything was fine, but come Summer, with the end of the school year, my neighbor's children were playing basketball until midnight in their backyard. They had a spot light that, like in this story, shone right into my bedroom. Since I was getting up at 5 am I did not appreciate the nuisance, so I put a letter in my neighbor's mailbox explaining the situation. I got a very ugly answer, saying basically that if his children wanted to play in his backyard, using his spot light it was none of my business. I understand what the Australian meant, by needing 8 inch thick curtains! I tried everything I could think of, but it did not do the job. And I had signed a one year lease! I wasn't very creative, but started putting notes in the neighbor's mailbox every morning, as I left for my work at a lab. It took a while, but eventually the neighbor relented and offered me a compromise: the children liked to play late because it gets so hot in SC (I hadn't consider that), so what about letting them play until 10 pm? That was later than my usual bedtime, but I appreciated his desire to work things out and I agreed. To my delight, September came, school started, and the basketball games started ending earlier and earlier. Eventually it cooled off enough that the children played in the afternoon. I think I had a much better neighbor than this Australian chap, although I must confess that I never tried to take the light down myself! LOL

A pellet gun would solve the problem.

Can that ass-hat neighbor prove I shot out that light with a pellet gun?

I would be offended if he even accused me of such a thing.

The guy said to put something up in his window. Ok, simple solution. Put up a mirror so the light is reflected back at him.

The best cure for a spotlight is a water gun full of cold water. This is assuming that water guns are still legal in Australia.

Spotlight bulbs are expensive as all goodness, and while a pellet could be used, it is a projectile so could get you in trouble. Water, however, hitting hot glass is just as effective.

I would suggest a mirror, or maybe a series of mirrors.

How’s this for a mixed metaphor: Two a$$holes having a pi$$ing match.

Nevertheless, I suggest the next time the trespasser commits theft, the homeowner makes use of a “boom-going” implement under the 2nd Amendment and blows his a$$ away. I’m looking forward to the “witty” comeback to that.

How about a Light Sharpener?

The Aussie has a great sense of humor. The American has absolutely none, and has no consideration for anyone but himself.

It is a very funny exchange. I love the way the Aussie tweaks the other guy at the end with the lawn mower and BBQ bit.
