The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al Qaeda', 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like 'pork', 'cloud', 'team' and 'Mexico'.

Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats.

It is a sad day when ordinary citizens have to watch what they say to avoid government eavesdropping.

I remember back in the 1990s when people would put "Echelon bait" at the bottom of their emails in an attempt to overload the intelligence system with false hits.

The article only shows the list published for public consumption. You can bet someone out there is watching for; 'liberal', 'gay', 'Alinsky' and more.

The KGB is alive and well in the USA in the disguise of DHS thanks to all the progressives hiding like cockroaches in both political parties.

I bet Kenyan usurper gets special attention.

As long as I am not advocating violence against the ruling elite I should be safe but you never know when it comes to a government filled with scum who will laugh at you if you even mention the US Constitution. Like Pelosi, Pete Stark.

Because the government has wandered into the the arena of thought crimes it is likely not being sorry if one of the ruling elite gets hurt could bring scrutiny.

speaking for only myself, the government may spy on me all they wish for I have nothing to hide. It will be those doing the spying who are wasting time (on me) while not pursuing the terrorist(s), preventing attacks by al qaeda who want to use dirty bomb(s), while congress pork(s) up in a cloud with their team and mexico should be renamed medico.

Department chiefs were forced to release the manual following a House hearing over documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit which revealed how analysts monitor social networks and media organisations for comments that 'reflect adversely' on the government

That would include every member of Free Republic. It is irrevelent taht you have nothing to hide. The Government is spying on people that dislike the way the Government is doing its job. How is that different than the KGB or the Gestapo? It is too high a price for supposed security against terrorists! I suspect that the program is better at spying on Governmmental opponets than terrorists...

It's a sad day when lil old ladies, nuns, 8 yr old kids have to stand there while some rent a cop sticks his hands all up in their privates.

Not one freakin muzzie terrorist has been detected, not one!

So if I posted something like “I’d like to attack Al Qaeda using a terrorism team from Mexico to bomb them from the clouds with a ton of pork” I should expect a visit from the Obama goons?

Duly noted.

Took the team down to mexico for some pork carnitas - on the way back saw it cloud up and rain. Those carnitas were the bomb but the restaurant was a bit dirty.

I'm guessing that is one of the "unpublished" words that gets you on their list. Welcome! After an encounter with some of the goons from the 0bama regime last weekend, I suspect I'm on their list, and it's NOT potential contributors!

I want to be be like John Hancock, let there be no mistake of my utter hatred and disgust for Baraq Hussein mohammed 0bama! This USED to be the Land of the Free, but no more!

Could “Obama” be one of the words they look for?

I notice that some here spell Obama as 0bama, using a zero rather than a capital O in his name.

Would it be far fetched that someone is doing data mining on sites like this, to see what people are saying about Obama????

There are so many laws that you almost certainly break some of them each and every day. So whether you talk about pork, bombs, terrorists or daisy’s its important that the government not be wasting time monitoring you when they could be monitoring bible thumping bitter gun clingers.

Someone once said that the tax-code is a weapon used against Americans.

I am not sure that it isn't true of bureaucracies in America. The EPA, the teacher's unions....and so on, that regulate us.

yep ... wonder when someone is going to tell those doing the monitoring to stop wasting their time? With duplication of monitoring probably taking place, there could be ten or more government employees monitoring one person who simply typed anything congress, the executive, or the SC deemed offensive. Since the new black panthers are simply known by holder as “my people” one has to believe the only safe place is inside the new black panthers if one does not desire attention from our obamanation. This (of course) is a guess, and only a guess. Actually this is NOT a guess.
