Happy Birthday, Mr. President (JFK would be 95, today)
blog.oup (Oxford University Press) ^ | 5/19/12 | Martin Kemp

It’s John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday at Madison Square Garden on 19 May 1962. Only it’s not. His real birthday is ten days in the future. The compelling mass schmaltz that Americans do with an underlying, knowing absurdity saturates the event. After she has characteristically missed her cue on at least two occasions, the host Peter Lawford finally (and with inadvertent irony) introduces the “late Marilyn Monroe”.

In a glittering faux-nude dress tighter than her own skin and enveloped in a soft fur wrap, that most desirable of female bodies shuffles with exaggerated mini-steps towards the podium, like a penguin on speed. Her floss hair has long given up any pretence to organic life. She is unwrapped by Lawford and ups the sexual ante with mute lip squirming directed at the microphone, which she holds tenderly like a living member. Everything is comically kitsch yet irresistibly powerful.

In less than three months after she sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", she was dead. JFK was assassinated a year and a half later.

And president Abraham Lincoln would be 203 today, with a belated birthday greetings.

Fortunately, by the year 3000, both of their animate heads will be preserved in jars for future generations.

Why has her image not only survived but blossomed in the half-century since her death?

I do not believe her image has "survived." Nor is the the reputation of Kennedy "surviving." both are increasingly coming off as drug-addled and sordid, and for the Kennedys, we can add the word "corrupt."

I wish he would have lived so the public could see what a worthless dirtbag he actually was, instead of this myth of Camelot.

I am so, so, sooooo tired of hearing about this letch, his two brothers, his drunkard relatives and his ‘promising’ offspring. So tired....

and his ‘promising’ offspring

Who increasingly remind me of the products of a puppy mill that has practiced ten generations of inbreeding...

Wonder if he’d still be molesting underage interns while his youngest brother was out snorkeling?

Marilyn Monroe, just another woman who associated with the Kennedy’s then suddenly got dead. Just ask RFK Jr’s ex. Oops we can’t anymore.
Martha Moxley?
Mary Jo Kopechne? She was just in the car with Teddy when she suddenly came down with dead. Not his fault.
They’re not doing anything wrong, it’s these women who keep dying. It’s their fault!

The old Madison Square Garden was a pretty big venue. Why was the Garden chosen and not a hotel ballroom? And who were the attendees at that “birthday party?” Everything about that event strikes me as odd.

Reportedly her ex-husband Joe DiMaggio was planning to remarry Marilyn, and believed that the Kennedys had her killed.

JFK would not have lived to the ripe old age of 95. His various maladies from naturally occurring ilneses, injuries and sexually transmitted diseases would have ravaged his body and brain and the treatments would have reduced his liver to sawdust by his 75th birthday.

He avoided a lot of misery.

Reading “Mary’s Mosaic” right now. Mary Pinchot Meyer was yet another of JFK’s girlfriends. They blazed up in the WH and did LSD according to this author. (I have nothing to do with this book or author except to be reading it at the behest of a friend.)

The Kennedys could be the most classless family this country has ever know and a blight on our government. John Kennedy (or Ted, they’re all interchangeably bad) makes Boyd Crowder look like a saint.
