Parents make that determination. My sister won’t allow her kids to have a Facebook account until they are 18. I have allowed my children to have one when they want it. I get the password and see what is going on....plus I am a friend as well. Any nonsense and I will ban them. So far they are being very responsible.
I’d say that alot of 13 year olds are already on Facebook...making this new attempt to get more users look fairly pointless.
Maybe Zuckerman can retro-actively sign up dead people...sort of like post death baptisms.

Should facebook ask the parents permission if the kids try to sign up on their own?
The only reason Facebook is doing this is to try to save itself from tanking any further in the stock market. I have absolutely no sympathy for them, and I don’t think kids should be allowed to use it.
But what are you going to do? This was a voluntary policy of Facebook’s part, to avoid criticism. I hesitate to say that there should be another LAW against people doing things on the internet, even though it’s a bad idea. Because, given the chance, the gubbermint can be relied on to allow all the bad things to happen and to block all the good things.
I guess Facebook will do whatever they choose. And I hope that jerk Zuckerberg goes bankrupt as a result.

I’m on FB and I love it, but I don’t think youngsters under 13 should be on it. In fact, I think they shouldn’t be on it at least until they’re 16. I would say even older than that, but there’s no way parents are going to keep their kids off older than that.
My daughter has allowed her two daughters, both under 13, on FB, with which I disagree. Granted, she doesn’t allow them to “friend” adults, has a copy of their passwords, and goes onto their sites when they’re not aware she’s doing so. They just talk with their school chums, but I still would feel uncomfortable having them have access to it. There’s enough other entertainment they can partake in, such as video games, and IMHO reading books, which I thoroughly enjoyed doing as a young person.
My wife does all of the above. Plus the computers are in the family room for all to see.
I would bet that the ones who voted that it’s distracting probably don’t even have an account. I think phones and texting is distracting.

How long do it figure it will be before the "could enable" in the second paragraph becomes "will enable"? Many of the adults I know who are on FB have given in to the temptation to buy a little something here and there to enhance the games they play there, and most of those have used credit cards instead of buying the little cards available in local stores.

My grandchildren have a facebook account, and nearly all their friends have one. In all the cases, every parent is a friend, and can see everything that is posted. Most of the kids are in sports, and it’s a quick and easy way to share team pictures of events, as well as staying up on what friends and relatives are doing. FB also has an ‘unfriend’ tab.
