Tendonnitis is developing in the front left leg. Sad, but I’m glad they made a conservative decision.

That’s okay, history will happen on November 6 when the country rejects it’s first half-black president.

Yeah, I hear ya. I have an uncanny ability to pick the winners for the first quarter, then cross the finish line last.

. . . . .

I was really looking forward to the race. This is just awful.

Hope the horse is only mildly under the weather and it isn’t something serious.

Glad they made the right decision.

It would have been very easy for them to stick him out there for one more race, even with the injury.

Good call.

Me either. She comes from a long line of long spindly legs. I believe her mother and/or her father had to be put down because of leg problems.

After what happened to Ruffian all of those years ago, I could never really get into horse racing after that.

Me too. That was awful.

I don't buy it.... Probably a cold calculation that an undefeated Derby and Preakness winner is worth more than a once defeated in the belmont one...

Wow. That sound you heard was the TV ratings crashing through the floor.

I’m not sure if wagering for the Belmont was taking place already at the track itself, if so those wagers placed at the track itself would be refunded. There are some places that take advance wagering, or more specifically called “Futures Wagering”. It’s basically far in advance wagering, for those who wish to place a wager when they can get good odds since that futures bet “locks” the odds at that time for you. Those futures wagers are now lost for the bettor, those are not refunded.

Also attendance at Horse Racing Parks across the country where you could bet on the race.

Secretariat? Greatest race horse in history IMO.

Once a horse leaves the gate the race has gone off. Prior to that all money is returned.

I bawled like a baby when she was put down.

A lot of people did, me included. As soon as I read the name Ruffian, I could see the film of that that horrible last race again in my mind--her leg snapping, her continuing to run. To me, hers is the most tragic racing story ever.

The owners are looking at so much breeding money ($bajillions) from the two wins already under their belts they aren’t going to risk it with another race. If the horse comes up lame and gets the farewell gunshot to the head, that’s $bajillions flushed down the toilet. The owners are protecting themselves and cashing in before that can happen.
