Please help to save and restore Star Trek's Galileo shuttlcraft.
Galileo Restoration ^ | June 09 2012 | Galileo Restoration

Posted on 06/09/2012 2:08:49 PM PDT by Names Ash Housewares

Thought destroyed but now found. It's not had the greatest care over the years and this group in Hollywood who are the acstual folks that have worked on the shows over the years is trying to raise funds and bid on an auction, restore and display properly the original full size Galileo shuttlecraft from the original Star Trek series. It's important TV history to preserve considering the impact Star Trek has had on society, inspiring even people to become astronauts.

Please throw in a few bucks for this, and watch the video at the fund raising site...

Of course, you could restore it, but where are you going to get the dilithium crystals to power the propulsion system, phasers and deflector shields?

I wonder if it would be cheaper to build a new one?

We are Trekkies, but we are also FReepers at a loss as to why we should donate to the restoration of a Sci-Fi fantasy such as this request, but not to the reality that is FreeRepublic.com for new servers.

Makes no sense to us.

I’ve long imagined that somebody could create a USS Enterprise (NCC-1701 series) hotel, underground. It could incorporate elements from several of the Enterprises on TV shows and movies.

First class rooms would be officer’s rooms, with less expensive crewman rooms. Part of the illusion would be that the ship was en route to a particular star system, with “arrivals” and “departures”, along with detours because of cosmic events.

Some elevators could act as elevators, and others as pseudo transporters, using different special effects.

What kind of logic is that???
I’ve donated to FR and other things
I consider important.
What’s wrong with investing in preserving
some of this nations pioneering spirit that
comes in the from of fictional works?????

People get inspired by fiction to make things FACT!

What kind of logic? The logic that says to me if you use Free Republic to solicit monies for some entity the solicitations should be for new servers for Free Republic.

I would believe once the obligations to Free Republic are satisfied then perhaps we could then donate to the other situations IMO of lesser value than Free Republic the source you are using to solicit donations at.

I’m not looking to start a fight. I’m looking at reason here. We just took two freakin’ months to collect enough monies to keep FR currently in operation, and now instead of sending in enough dough for new servers we are being solicited to send monies to restore a science fiction prop.

It doesn’t make sense.

Did you read the list? It was created to show how many things were more worthy of spending money on, than “fighting global warming”. The list is in order of benefit/cost ratio. Notice where they put expenditures related to “global warming — in the “bad projects” list.

When this list was published — leftists, envirofascists, and global warmists (but, I repeat myself) had a hissy fit.

You asked for a link to a list — I gave it to you. If you think you can come up with a better one, have at it.

I’ve read many of your commentaries over the years, and you HAD my respect as a participating FReeper, but that last response was so completely off base I have to reconsider that respect.

Where did I say anything about the necessity to stick to politics? I didn’t. The discussion is about solicitations of donations, and the perspective that FR deserves the donations for those sorely needed servers ahead of any others.

I don’t think it detracts from keeping FR servers humming.

“I don’t know what else to say, I just think this
is a worthy cause worth a few bucks.”

I didn’t say it wasn’t.

“I don’t think it detracts from keeping FR servers humming.”

I didn’t say it does.

In case you haven’t noticed FR’s servers are old, and inadequate to keep up with the growth in traffic, and often fail. We’ve had numerous discussions at FR about the problem, and attempts to collect enough money to upgrade the servers met with a plethora of negativism from too many know-it-alls that the attempts to upgrade have been thwarted.

My point is that if FR isn’t deserving of, or the first for the donations, then we shouldn’t be using FR to solicit donations for something of less importance than the upkeep, the upgrade of the host of your request?

I hope this clears up the misunderstanding.

Here’s only three links to discussion as I mentioned. Ultimately Freepers didn’t want to pay the additional, and Jim said he’d find some other way to pay for the upgrades.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2654879/posts
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2874129/posts
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2827460/posts

There was far more discussion regarding this, some of that discussion getting downright boisterous, and in fact beyond civil at times, but I couldn’t find those discussions in the system unfortunately.

Multiple discussions started by Jim Robinson were initiated in the first Freepathon of this year, and carried into the most recent.

There were also multiple vanities by various members on the topic as well, but again I’m not finding them in my searches. Perhaps you might be able to find them as you seem so confident in your proclamations.

I really liked that list, when it was first published -- because it showed that there were lots of better ways to spend the money being wasted on "fighting global warming". You called it "leftist gibberish"; and perhaps it was written in lefty speak. That's why it was so effective at the time -- it turned all the "we're trying to save the world" feel-good crap back on the warmists, and presented them with some real inconvenient truths.

It wouldn't be my personal list of "world priorities" -- but, it was a list. I should have made all that more clear on first posting. My list would have to include security for western civilization, for instance. In keeping with the theme of this thread; I'd also add more space exploration -- and exploitation. What would you put on your list?

Sadly something has gone afoul and this funding attempt is now cancelled. I can attest that my donation was refunded in full.

Something must have fell apart as the big Trek names backing it pulled out.

So for my fellow original Trek fans, let’s hope the right person bids, wins, restores right and puts in a museum.

Maybe I win the lotto next week.

There was a huge project that almost went forward to build a full-sized Enterprise in downtown Las Vegas. I read the article here in the last few months. They had the land deal in place, investors, the only thing that killed it was the head of the studio.

Here, I found the article.

You should have dropped that line of thought when the first person explained it to you.

It’s like I always say at the grocery store where they have this annoying habit of asking me for a dollar for something every time I shop.

I always tell them, “I gave at 7-11.” They give me a puzzled look, but it’s true. I have to buy cigarettes for the domestic partner. They cost a fortune because of taxes. the taxes supposedly go to help needy children with health care.

Ergo, we can donate to preserving this non-existent space shuttle if we want to without feeling guilty because you have another cause.

It was, but the Enterprise got another in time to get hijacked by the Companion in season 2. Perhaps Galileo was one of the two names Enterprise could use for its shuttles.
