I was in Houston, stuck in traffic behind a cab. The cab had a big sign on the back. The sign indicated slavery was alive and well in Houston and to report all instances of slavery to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It listed an 800 number. It went on to say this ad paid for by a federal grant. Huh? My taxes are paying for this crap? What is up with this?
They'd typically find a woman working as a house servant for rich foreigners in the DC area. The woman wouldn't be let out of the house and was paid little ~ just enough to send back to the Philippines or Indonesia for her unemployed husband who'd spend his days in a coffee house.
So, yes, slavery exists in modern America.
I"d suspect Sheila Jackson Lee knows more than her fair share of people who keep a slave or two at home who sleeps in the utility room downstairs.

Sex trafficking and illegal immigrants who are smuggled into working for holders to “pay off” their debts (that can never be fully paid).
But if there was a crack down on illegal immigration and prosecution of coyotes, it could become a thing of the past. Too many politicians (in this Democrat run city) are cool with it.
Slavery and human trafficking is still alive and well in the United States today. It is found in prostitution, illegal drug production, small-scale manual-intensive manufacturing, agriculture, and domestic workforce. The illegal immigrant community is highly susceptible to ‘slavery.’ Usually the darker side of our underground economy is where the purveyor of this exist. In some cases it in the more affluent that keep domestics in slavery. It is something we need to fight.
It is how you fight it that we are at odds with. Stopping the bad guys and taking them off the street is what you want but here is more to it when the executive branch is involved. we are back again at the immigration issue that fosters the problem. How to fix this with the illegal immigrant issue, I don’t know.
It’s a lot more prevalent and widespread today, than most realize.
Interesting points. I was always taught the definition of slavery was the practice of owning slaves (i.e., when one person literally “owns” another person).
I did not make the jump that slavery in this case may have been intended to include coercive or unfair employment.
It always involves coercion.
Illegal immigration has many corrupting effects on the border states. They human smugglers are not nice people. They often work with other criminals in the US to set up sex slavery operations. They have been busted in Houston in the past.
America has immigrants from third would countries where slavery is a regular part of life. The Middle East and Africa enslave people, Illegals are the weakest people in our society and sometimes end up enslaved as domestic workers. In addition, uncoth employers hire illegals then refuse to pay them.
Illegals are afraid to contact authorities because they are not supposed to be in this country. That makes them vulnerable to crime. Americans are subject to crime of illegals because they have no ties here to respect and often illegals are criminals trying to escape the justice system of their own nations. Illegals get paid to vote in our elections...and on and on.
The elite act as if open borders is some kind of charity on their part. Illegal immigration is a corrupting force in America an a gift to no one.

Agreed, but I still struggle with the definition. If that is what the sign was trying to address, why not say...
If you see sex trafficking...
If you see immigrants being smuggled...
If you see people being forced to work against their will...
I just took the big red dictionary off the shelf and it defines a slave as a person that is owned as property. It could just be me, but forced labor including forced illegal activity such as prostitution, is something different than slavery.
“Slavery” is legal. Kidnapping and extortion are illegal.
I live in the DC area. As another poster pointed out, there are a lot of instances of real slavery here: women locked up in some foreign couple’s house, beaten, forced to work 18 hours a day every day, not paid, not allowed to use the phone, forced to sleep on a pile of rags in the basement, not allowed to learn English, etc. You can call it coercion, you can call it pecan pie if you like, but it’s slavery.

4. one who has no freedom of action, but whose person and services are wholly under the control of another.
Definition 3 and possibly 1 refer to de jure status, or status under the law.
Definitions 2, 4 and possibly 1 refer to de facto status, how a person is treated in fact without reference to whether his treatment is legal.
So, yeah, a person can be enslaved illegally. In fact, slavery is technically illegal everywhere on earth at the moment. Still exists in many places de facto.
Does getting our nation hopelessly in debt, count?
Some muslims in Colorado had a slave for 4 years. They also raped her and forced her to provide sexual services to friends.
The judge sentenced them to pay her a fair wage for the past four years.
This country is screwed by political correctness.
