Police release photo of mysterious 'forest boy'[Germany]

Berlin police on Wednesday released photos an English-speaking teenage boy who wandered into the city nine months ago saying he had been living for the last five years in the forest with his father.

Police spokesman Thomas Neuendorf said all attempts to identify the boy since he emerged in the German capital on Sept. 5 have been unsuccessful, and they are now hoping the release of his photo may produce some leads.

"We have checked his DNA against all missing person reports, sent the data to Interpol so that they could check it internationally, but unfortunately without any success," Neuendorf said.

The boy has told authorities his father called him "Ray" and that he was born June 20, 1994, but claims not to know his last name or where he's from.

He said his mother, Doreen, died in a car accident when he was 12 and after that he and his father, Ryan, took to the forest. He said they wandered using maps and a compass, staying in tents or caves overnight.

He told authorities that after his father died in August, 2011, he buried him in the forest and then walked five days north before ending up in Berlin, and showed up at city hall.

Investigators have been unable to confirm any details about a fatal car accident that matches up with Ray's story, however, and haven't been able to find the body of the father - raising "serious doubts" about the story.

"There are many question marks," Neuendorf said.

He looks too well fed to have been out in the woods for five years. If he’s so able to have survived in the woods for five years, with his father, why was his father so concerned about him seeking civilization the moment he was dying?

Another Kaspar Hauser!

Germans have Kaspar Hausers the way the Scots have the Loch Ness monster.

Put him back in the woods, keep your distance, and see if he can survive on his own for a month. If he can, he’s telling the truth. If he needs help, then he’s making up stories.

I thought that, too, and too well dressed. However, from the story, he wandered out in August of 2011, and has probably had a few meals since then.

They are publicizing it now to try to identify him, which they have not done yet.

This is very doubtful! His hair is too perfect and how would they be able to accommodate his growth with the fresh clothes he seems to be wearing? I think the necklace is too perfect as well.

He should be around 17? Mother died at 12 and they took to the woods for 5 years? He should have at least some sort of growth on his face. Again, too perfect!

I came across this one in the archives while looking for this story. I wonder how it turned out for them. A later news article said they disliked the news and media and disappeared again.

A German folk tale about a supposed ‘’wild man’’ found in a German forest who is ‘’civilized’’. The moral point of the story is a kind of looking at ‘’civilized’’ society's attempt to ‘’civilize’’ the savage when the ‘’savage’’ views society with all it's faults and moral contradictions as the real savage.

Look at his cheekbones! He’s got to be at least 1/128th Cherokee, so he cook crab cakes in Oklahoma and run for Senate in Massachusetts... living in the woods is a piece of cake.

I know the story of Kasper Hauser and was just wondering if this were a modern day version of the same.

I even own a copy of the movie “The Enigma of Kasper Hauser” by Werner Hertzog. Really interesting film and story.

I read about Hauser when I was a kid. One of the most interesting stories I ever read.

Humans have been able to live in the woods and thrive for thousands of years.. If his father knew what he was doing there is no reason for them to starve.

Yes.

Which means, if they had the ability to survive well, for five years in the woods, that kids should still be able to survive well because he’s had 5 years of training.

People are consistent. If they hate society enough that they’d rather be in the woods, it doesn’t seem likely that their first concern for their child is to seek civilization upon their death. They’d probably work overtime to give their child survival skills so they wouldn’t have join society.

The use of language also degrades quickly, if it’s not constantly used. If this child really spent 5 years of prime development time in solitude and away from having to communicate, his language skills should be much more primitive than his age.

The boy has told authorities his father called him "Ray"

Or you can call him "Jay" ... or you can call him "Ray-Jay" ... just don't call him out of the woods late for dinner...
