LIVE FROM THE US OPEN (tough course, great weather, and huge crowds)
What I have seen | 6-16-2012 | Me

Posted on 06/16/2012 3:06:04 PM PDT by James Oscar

3:05 Pacific Time

Olympic Golf Course

Daly City, California

Lake Merced Golf Course Clubhouse

Had to take a little nap in my truck after a liquid lunch at our hospitality room here at the Merced Golf Course.

But Tiger and Furyk will be teeing it up soon and I need to shuttle back into the war that is the US Open at Olympic.

Impossible to see anything, move around or get a beer but the electricity is palatable - something very noteworthy is taking place.

My forehead is better after a $27 hat from the merchandise tent and I am reasonably sober - so just reporting in on an exceptional day on the coast.

It’s gonna be 80 on the course, here in san jose we’re topping 100.. beats the heck out of a rainy clambake event.

Too much commentary, dull interviews and “wackiness”. I swear I saw about 2 minutes of actual golf in 20 minutes.

LOL

Indeed - well the brain is a bit foggy. Never experienced this type of crowd on a course.

Two hour wait to check your cellphone and security checkpoints that are very personal and thorough.

45 minuets to buy a beer - limit of two only. The walk from the limo drop off is uphill about 35 miles and the course seems to stretch from sea to shining sea. Still have not walked the entire 18.

On a live thread, that is a good thing.

I was freezing on Wednesday and somehow burned my face and forehead like a Hiroshima survivor.

But at least I could see something - now it is just crazy and I have opened another beer here where the 8 tvs are a lot better than row 6 on the middle of the fairway.

J - O you da man! Thanks for your most welcome live reporting from this historic US Open. You are our Hunter Thompson out there: Fear and Loathing on the 18th Green. In fact, didn't he crash his motorcycle in that stretch of Pac Coast Hwy somewhere near Daly City? I'll be checking back to your post the rest of the day. Thanks!

The field is 10,000 over par and the greens are getting arid. It will be a long afternoon - wish I had a good spot on 13.

Hunter took a perfectly good firearm and wrote his own final comments. Wish he could have held on longer.

Really miss his art.

even tho the course is not smack on the ocean, the wind gets to ya and the sun is a lot more potent for some reason.. that big gallery they built by the 8th could use some more shade but it’s a nice idea.. stadium golf. usually the weather is a little less intense,, but with global warming , welll, yaknow..

2 beer limit? damn. It’s bad enough they strip ya of all your wireless gear. hang in there. Thanks for the on the ground report. :-]

I’m for anyone not called Tiger, and in basketball I’m for any team that doesn’t have a Lebron on it.

Well it has gained some yardage over the years but still got most of the mane.

Grabbed a quick haircut Thursday in the City and the Asian stylist called me the “red faced Budda”. Said it meant loyalty. I hope that was true and not really “stupid drunk tourist”.
