Pro-lifers doused with chocolate milk while protesting abortion in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, June 18, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-life activists with the Canadian cross-country New Abortion Caravan were shocked Saturday as they were doused with chocolate milk while campaigning in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The pro-life project, led by the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform, is travelling from Vancouver to Ottawa with large box-bodied trucks featuring graphic images of aborted babies. They have faced strong opposition in many of the communities they have visited, with counter-protests led in part by the Canadian Auto Workers Union, Canada’s largest private sector union.

A Youtube video depicts a man, a local resident and business owner, walking behind several women holding signs with graphic images while he pours chocolate milk over them. He was stopped by police before he was able to empty a second carton on the pro-lifers.

“Arrest me. I don’t care,” says the man. “I’m speaking for everybody around here. We put all this money together, trying to beautify our neighbourhood, and you come in here…”

After the incident, the pro-life activists continued their campaign and delivered a presentation, as scheduled, in Thunder Bay that evening.

“We are disturbed that this man would bully and assault young women trying to speak up for other women as well as children,” said Stephanie Gray, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform.

“But we are inspired by the calm response of our team members who refuse to fight violence with violence. By their actions, my courageous colleagues echoed the sentiment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who once said, ‘We will match your ability to inflict suffering with our ability to endure suffering.’”

Communists love their violence, inhumanity to others, and killing babies. It’s a tradition with them.

IMO, the graphic images do nothing but turn people against Pro-Lifers.
Yellow balloons and birthday cakes work.

These young women are very lucky it was only chocolate milk. Make Pro-deathers angry and they are likely to do much worse.

Why don't they just make smaller cars if unplanned pregnancy is an issue for the Auto Workers Union?

The thing here is get a load of what the man said about the protesters. Something about how hard people in the hood had worked to clean up the area? Yet they have an abortion clinic? Talk about blight. Abortion clinics do more to drive away business because no one wants to be beside them. Then property values fall when places can’t be sold/rented. Think of what that does to local taxes. What these people are doing is just showing what goes on at the local clinic and they shoot the messenger? How about if I hold up graph of what it has done to the local economy then would that make people want rid of the clinic?

I wouldn't want them in my neighborhood either.....good Lord...pictures? SICK. Fight it in court. I hate when Jehovah's come walking around the neighborhood too.....anything forced on you or in your face is going to be highly resented. Especially something with graphic pictures. Those people are loony toons.

I know at least one of the organizers of this caravan personally, and I can assure you he is not a loony toon. In a structured debate, he can use plain old logic to turn poor-choicers into sputtering puddles of irrational goo.

Why is he out promoting graphic pictures? That’s not right or shows that he’s sane. If he was in view of my house, I’d insist he be arrested...esp. if there are children around. He is NOT going to change minds by getting in peoples facing forcing his idea’s on people. He should peacefully get signatures from respectable places...then change the law. He’s only creating resentment! They are probably causing traffic accidents too.

Let me ask you a question, Fawn. Was it folks like William Wilberforce creating resentment by revealing the conditions on the slave ships?

Or was it the people who enslaved men women and children creating resentment?

Why is he out promoting graphic pictures? That’s not right or shows that he’s sane.

We put graphic pictures of diseased organs on cigarette packages to deter people from smoking. Are the people in government who mandate these things not sane?

We show history students graphic images of Holocaust victims. Are schoolteachers therefore insane? Was Stephen Spielberg insane for making Schindler's List so graphic?

Student drivers are shown the graphic consequences of reckless or impaired driving. Are driving teachers and the police insane?

Of course not. We all recognize that there are situations when graphic, sometimes even gory, images are exactly the method of persuasion that is needed.

He should peacefully get signatures from respectable places...then change the law.

How do you know they aren't also doing this?

He’s only creating resentment!

He is also changing minds. Yes, the pictures are horrible. But the pictures are also true. If we are so upset by the horror in the pictures, why is it that we allow the horrible thing that they portray? I think the majority of Canadians are simply complacent about abortion; after all, we haven't had a law restricting it in nearly 25 years. Maybe a bloody fetus or two is just the kick in the pants some people need to start thinking about whether that's the Canada they want to live in.

I’m so happy! It makes my heart glad.
However, I have had people tell me how nasty they feel those pictures are, even Pro-Lifers. Out in the public at fairs and on the street, I feel they are inappropriate. We should self-censor as to what will work where.

When we hand out candy and balloons to kids, parents are open to hearing our message.

Excellent post RansomOttawa. It is amazing how this one individual gets so outraged over the graphic image of murder rather than the murder itself.

That is how delusional the pro-abortion crowd has become. They actually think the moral high ground is to kill babies rather than focusing their efforts towards sexual responsibility and prevention.

I want to see these disgusting images everywhere until this mass murder is stopped.

Everyone needs to do what they feel comfortable doing. I agree, many will respond positively to your outreach, and we need folk doing what you do.

And yes, many people, including prolifers have expressed apprehension with the display. It’s understandable to any right thinking person that they would find the display revolting.

But, it’s the truth. The clinic down the street is going to fight as hard as possible to keep those images away from people, so that everytime they hear the word ‘abortion’, they will not associated it with dismembered babies.

Truth is not easy. If it were then we wouldn’t be dealing with these things.

“You don’t go out in the public and display human disgusting photos”

So what you are saying is that the photos are disgusting because they represent human remains?

“yell at people or follow them”

Clearly you’ve not been there. CCBR simply stands by the displays, and people walk by them. They do not yell at anybody, nor do they follow them.

If people do not want to see them, they can walk away.

“allow them to be seen by passing children and families”

Let me ask you a question. Do you think that an abortion doctor, doing an abortion behind closed doors is ok? He’s not forcing any children or families to see what he is doing.

If not, why not?

“That’s not the way to change peoples minds.”

They changed my mind on this issue, so I will respectfully assert that you are wrong. I know I’m not the only one either.

If you want to do things the way that you feel is appropriate, by all means.

You two aren’t thinking clearly.

Of course I'm thinking clearly. Yes, the pictures are disturbing and disgusting. I've already acknowledged that; it's kind of the point.

What I'm not doing is allowing my emotional reaction to those images to cloud my judgment. If my only reaction was, "Oh, sick, disgusting, get those horrible things out of my sight," and I then refused to even contemplate what those pictures represent, and whether I want to live in a country where such a thing is legal and unrestricted, then I would not be thinking clearly.

What they are doing is worse than what PETA does.

The reality that they are protesting is worse than what PETA is protesting. Emphatically so, since I don't buy into PETA's flawed assumptions that animals are humans' equals.

But if I accepted for the sake of argument that meat is murder, then I would also accept PETA's use of graphic images of dead animals to change people's minds. Just because I think their message is bogus, doesn't necessarily invalidate their means of suasion.

. . . or allow them to be seen by passing children and families.....you only turn people against you.

Since this incident, the CCBR have put up a more in-depth blog post about it (The Thunder Bay Assault: A Child's Conscience Versus a Man's Anger). It turns out that Brian, the chocolate-milk assaulter had a small child with him. She wasn't traumatized by the offensive pictures. She wanted to know: what happened to the baby? Why did it get hurt? It appears that Brian attacked the pro-lifers at least partly because their presentation didn't upset her as it did him.

That’s not the way to change peoples minds.

The fact that it does change minds, and one person on this thread has already said it changed his mind, belies this assertion.

Hand out education or other information in a sane peaceful way..

Just by way of reminder, remember which side was peacefully holding up signs and talking to passers-by, and which side was flinging chocolate milk.

and change the law.

Changing the law is not going to happen in our present political reality. We have a liberal Supreme Court, and a government which, though headed by a pro-life Prime Minister, refuses to reopen the abortion debate in Canada. CCBR's mission isn't to make abortion illegal; it's to make abortion unthinkable. When we've managed the latter, then we can take care of the former.
