Many who rail against the costs of higher education and the massive debts that most graduates carry point out that this drives graduates toward high-paying but potentially socially irresponsible jobs, like investment banking or private equity or a hedge fund, or really anything that pays well in this day and age, but is probably slowly gutting our economy.
And jobs like this are in New York, San Francisco and Boston and barely anywhere else, so these increasingly unaffordable cities are your only hope as recent graduate of extinguishing massive student debts, right? Have you considered rural Kansas?
ABC News reports that some localities are offering student loan assistance to young, educated people -- all they have to do is move to places that don't fit the typical Young Urban Professional mold. They'll have to be Young Rural Professionals, should they choose to move to one of Kansas' Rural Opportunity Zones -- located in 50 different counties in the state; or maybe they'll be Young Blighted-Urban Professionals, should they move to downtown Niagara Falls, N.Y., an over-redeveloped, but somehow still blighted, neighborhood located right next to the majestic falls for which the town is named. Kansas is offering student loan payment of "up to $15,000" to college educated people moving to ROZs, reports ABC. That, or up to five years income-tax free. Niagara Falls' program, by comparison, is more modest.
The class of 2013 from both Niagara University and Niagara County Community College will be the first with the opportunity to apply for the program, which offers up to $7,000 (over the course of two years) for paying down student debt. "To qualify, applicants will have to rent an apartment or buy a home within a designated downtown area," writes ABC News -- you can't just move anywhere in the city.

Sounds tempting. But not so much. Cost of living would out weigh the forgiveness.. ROI is a negative deal..
Great.....let the “Black History”, “Social Services”, etc. Graduates get Taxpayers to pay for their sensitivity, diversity, and touchy-feely classes......then, they can enter non-productive Taxpayer-funded Government jobs, and live the High Life on others’ backs forever.....
rural Kansas has a high cost of living?
they have “dry” counties...which is even worse.
There, fixed it.
Is there a job market??
The referenced story implies there are.
They have dry counties...which is even worse.
So does Florida. But we can work around that...
Are you going to make me read it? Ill check back in a sec..
How? all the cheap houses are in the counties you don’t want.
My point is Im 3 classes short of an MBA in Healthcare Management. Should I not return to St Pete or Tampa (where the most need is) to move to Kansas to get a break on my debt. I doubt its even close.
Morally or mathematically correct.
=incorrect.
I’m sure you’re correct.
Good people in rural Kansas but not a place I’d want to live either.
Never know. Im too damn tired to get up and get a pencil and figure it out. I second guessed myself after I posted. There are four factors here. Cost of living , income, family, and ability to pay back loan. Oh, also, an analytical glance at govt and taxes. That’s five. Are the girls hot??
Hot girls, that’s very important if you’re a single male. If the quality is subpar, you wouldn’t want to stay in the region for long.
Well, I think beautiful women are everywhere... I just want to go where noone knows me.. ;0)
Petroleum engineers have no problem finding work.
...slowly gutting our economy? Why should I believe anything said after that?
I didn’t see that. It sounded more like “if you build it they will come.” They’d be far better off in helping grads find jobs rather than subsidize the loans.
