Pet piranha bites off toddler's fingertip
MAINE TOWNSHIP, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - When a northwest suburban mother discovered her 18-month-old daughter's finger had been bitten, she assumed the family pit bull was responsible.
But Cook County sheriff's police said the culprit was actually another household pet: a piranha, Pioneer Press is reporting.
Police said one of the child's fingertips was bitten off on the night of June 19 inside the family's home in the Bay Colony subdivision in unincorporated Maine Township.
Police said the child's mother reported she heard her daughter crying and noticed the toddler's finger was bleeding, the fingertip missing.
The mother believed the family's pit bull had bitten the child, but further investigation by police determined the piranhas, swimming in a fish tank near where the child had been playing, may have been responsible.
Police said the child's father cut open one of the piranhas, and the piece of his daughter's finger was recovered from the fish.
The child and the severed part of her finger were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said she could not disclose information about the child's treatment, including whether doctors were able to reattach her fingertip.

What kind of morons do we have for parents these days?
I just don't get it, I guess. Why not add some cheetahs, rattlesnakes, cobras and scorpions just to round out the fun.
What does one name a pet piranha? (Notice they first blamed their pet pit bull.)
“What kind of morons do we have for parents these days?”
Millions of them.
A pitbull AND a piranha AND a toddler in the house?

My dad always had fish when we were growing up but the bitey ones were out of reach.
Personally I prefer Oscars and Jack Dempseys.
I thought piranhas were verboten to import or keep.
I’ve seen a similar fish in the stores that looks very much like piranhas but isn’t dangerous.
Good one! Lol!
Sometimes a toddler will actually grow the tip of their finger back. I hope that happens this time or that they were able to re-attach it.
Yes! Cichlids are great home aquarium fish. I used to have a large tank with Tiger Oscars and a Jack Dempsey. They were very smart and exhibited lots of personality ... for fish.
I’ve had a very large pet Oscar jump out of the water and bite onto my finger one time,,, startled me to say the least....
I beleive I deserved it too.
Probably one of those big city sophisticated progressive parents that can totally out think us mere mortals. Looks like the only one with any sense was the toddler who pulled its hand out of the water when bitten. Betcha the big city sophisticated progressive intellectuals don’t get rid of the fish or dog, will probably buy a snake now. Remember, “you can’t out-stupid a progressive”!
Yup. I guess lobotomies are free in Illinois.
1. Idiot with a “pet” pirahna?
2. Idiot with a pit bull and an 18 month kid? That kid will be as good as dead.
3. Mom can’t tell the difference between pirahna bite and pit bull bite? THE DAMN PIT BULL WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED AT A FINGERTIP, EINSTEIN!!!!
God we have such morons alive today. Seriously. Makes me think we need to have compentency tests before people mate. I would truly not want it but it gets me that frustrated. That poor kid is going to be in another story soon where the dog that’s always been great snaps and kills that little child.

Don’t give those morons/idiots any more ideas! They’ll actually do it!
