Report: Calif. to get seas rising 6 inches by 2030

The West Coast will see an ocean several inches higher in coming decades, with most of California expected to get sea levels a half foot higher by 2030, according a report released Friday.

The study by the National Research Council gives planners their best look yet at how melting ice sheets and warming oceans associated with climate change will raise sea levels along the country's Pacific coast. It is generally consistent with earlier global projections, but takes a closer look at California, Oregon and Washington.

Although the 6 inches expected for California by 2030 seem minor, the report estimated that sea levels there will be an average of 3 feet higher by 2100. About 72 percent of the state's coast is covered by sandy cliffs, and the rest include beaches, sand dunes, bays and estuaries.

Seaside cliffs will be cut back about 30 yards over the next 100 years, and sand dunes will be driven back even more, said Robert A. Dalrymple, a professor of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University and chairman of the group that wrote the report. Coastal wetlands will be able to keep pace for about 50 years, but will eventually be overwhelmed without new sources of sand, and room to move inland.

The report noted that dams hold back about a third of that sand, which once washed into the sea from the Klamath River in Northern California.

Northern California, Oregon and Washington can expect a less dramatic increase - about 4 inches by 2030 and 2 feet by 2100 - because seismic activity is causing land to rise north of the San Andreas Fault, offsetting increasing sea levels, and drop south of it. The fault runs out to sea at Cape Mendocino.

Oregon has the advantage of tough basalt formations on much of the...

Obviously, this report is based on data collated BEFORE Obama was elected and promised to lower the sea levels.

You can take a greenhouse and fill it full of CO2, and the temperature stays the same. (unless the Sun goes behind a cloud).

Can we all line up and give this guy a wedgie when he is proven wrong in 2030?

Now is there a brain here that can tell me the net effect between melting ice and evaporated water in relation to increases in temperature?

Smartaleck (but true) answer number TWO:

Sun melts Ice.

Clouds (water vapor) provide cover from Sun.

It takes the Sun a LONG LONG TIME to melt ice.

It only takes a SECOND for a CLOUD to drop the temperature by 10 degrees.

Just damn...there’s goes the Oregon Coast. With all the Californians moving to Oregon, elevations on land will decrease by a couple of feet, to boot.

You guys need to be more respectful of scientific authority. The projection wasn't made by some pissant little research council, it was made by the National Research Council. That sounds pretty darned important to me.

Thanks Hunton Peck. This is an interesting coinky-dinky — the alleged psychic, Edgar Cayce, referred to a 40 year period of Earth disasters running from 1958 to 1998 — but there’s an explicit reference in one of his purported readings to a different calendar, which adds on the length of Christ’s life (starts at the Crucifixion, rather than birth), hence add about 28 years (Herod died in 4 BC); the 40 year period runs from circa 1986 to 2016.

If we’re going to build special walls to make the sea level higher in California than everywhere else in the world I vote for building them 100 feet high, not a few inches.

I didn’t read the entire article but I assume they’re talking about something like building walls to hold in the ocean since sea level is the same everywhere without them. If seismic activity causes the difference, they’ll have bigger problems than increased sea level.

Maybe the state is just sinking because there are so many people living there. I do believe this theory is supported by at least one of our illustrious politicians in DC.

Try to google "Rising Sea Level" and every science "hack" with a computer pops up with his results of "computer modeling."
Geez, there are hundreds of them.
The serious one never pops up. I'll save you the trouble.

Remember global warming and the East Anglia Fraud? The raw data those "scientist-criminals" "lost or erased" can never be replaced.
Sea Level Rise is the new magnet for every nut case from Al Gore to your neighborhood homeless mutterer.

I can't resist adding this one.
What a clueless megalomaniacal hack sounds like...

The seas won’t be rising 6”, California will be sinking 6”, weighed down by its growing mass of stupidity.

Given their track record, prepare for no rise in sea level by 2030.

Scam by planners to use zoning/police power to regulate land use along coast. Pure phooey!

You guys need to be more respectful of scientific authority.

Either you forgot the sarcasm tag or you are having another D'OH! moment.

Perhaps reading the article at the link in post 35 might help.
