All bullied bus monitor Karen Klein wanted was an apology. Now she's getting that … and then some.
Police say the four boys who tormented the 68-year-old on a school bus in upstate New York earlier this week have taken responsibility for their actions. The students are also saying they're sorry.
"I feel really bad about what I did," one said in a statement to CNN. "I wish I had never done those things. If that had happened to someone in my family, like my mother or grandmother, I would be really mad at the people who did that to them."
Another said, "When I saw the video I was disgusted and could not believe I did that. I am sorry for being so mean, and I will never treat anyone this way again."
The video of the seventh-graders cursing, taunting and physically threatening a crying Klein has become a rallying point against bullying. It has also prompted an overwhelming outpouring of support for the longtime school bus worker.
An online campaign to fund a vacation for Klein had grown to more than $500,000 by Friday afternoon, far surpassing the initial $5,000 goal. Max Sidorov, the Toronto man who started the fund two days ago, said he did so partly because he was bullied himself as a child.
"Maybe we can send her on a great, early retirement," Sidorov told The Associated Press.
Then Anderson Cooper surprised the grandmother of eight on CNN Thursday night with an all-expenses paid trip for nine people to Disneyland from Southwest Airlines. The Walt Disney Co. made the same offer for Disney World.

The Rochester paper said she’ll owe tax. I can see it on the corporate gifts to her, but not on the thousands of individual gifts of $25 that made up the current total of $620,000 she will receive from the website.
I’m sending my gift to her address.

I’d call it karma. She gets rich. The boys feel the wrath of an entire nation. If it isn’t karma, then God has a delightful sense of humor.

Giving the money to a charity is a much better idea, IMHO.
Look, I feel bad this poor lady had put with the taunts and insults from these kids. But does she deserve $600,000 for it? No!
I have, and I am sure most everyone else has, been taunted or insulted (or the new word, bullied). You have two options. 1) Shake it off and let it roll off you, or 2) fight back.
It’s a cruel world and always has been since Cain slew Able. You got to toughen up. This lady just sat there while these kids called her names. She was the bus monitor for God’s sake! She was supposed to keep order on the bus. Instead she sat there an cried as the kids were unruly. From my view, she showed incompitence in her job.
I know this woman didn’t ask for the money, but the victicrat mentality of people think she deserves money for this.
The true outcome should have been the video was shown to the parent of these kids. The parents teach those kids a lesson about kindness, politeness and manners and those parents send those kids to see this woman have them apologize.
If everyone who was ever insulted by anyone was deserving of a cash reward, we’d all be rich. Give me a break.

She should use some of the money to pay for a boot camp for the kids, run by R. Lee Ermey. Everyone wins that way, including the kids, although they may not know it for a few years.

I have seen this covered in the articles, I've read but, how much backup did she get from the school administrators? If none, then she is powerless. Perhaps the government school is incompetent in that they figuratively declawed her and extracted her teeth.
