According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of children in the United States with autism has risen by 78 percent over the past decade.  It is now estimated that 1 out of every 88 children in the United States has some form of autism disorder.

Autism rates have gone up because the threshold has gone down. Its that simple.

It’s similar to why particular disease rates are much higher in developed countries, because people get diagnosed and don’t just die of “an illness”.

Even very minor autism is now diagnosed, whereas 20 years ago, not even all severe cases were given an official diagnosis.

The Haldane dilemma forbids thinking that any sort of genetic problem could increase its market share the way autism has via any natural process. It can’t be pollution since virtually all forms of pollution are way down since the 50s and 60s, and the only two things I come up with are vaccines and and the question of going from an electrical to an electronic world, and vaccines strike me a the more likely of the two.

You are absolutely correct. 100 years from now, people will look ack on the number of vaccines, adjuvants, media, preservatives, stc that we currently give to helpless infants as BARBARIC. if they don’t give you autism when young, they will give you Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s when older.

Look, Italy just paid out for vaccine caused autism. I too have a son with autism, the only one of my 4 who had vaccines under one year. He was also my only child with a trashed immune system, constant colds and ear infections. My other 3 have never had one ear infection.

I know MANY families with kids with autism who regressed immediately after a screaming painful reaction to vaccines like the family in this article.

Always make decisions that do the least harm. Do not vaccinate your children in the first year at the very least. I’m not vaccinating at all any more. Instead, focus on building up the vhildren’s immune system.

I don’t mean overdiagnosis.

I mean, is there anything to my idea that parents with difficult children used to treat it as a behavior issue, but now they take them to a doctor? That the incidence has remained steady while the science has advanced?

The Amish have less vaccinations and much lower autism rate.

1. The autism-vaccine link had been disproven.

2. Consider the alternative. Assuming there is a link, far more children will die without the vaccine than will live with autism.

3. You don’t drive children anywhere do you? Cars are ten thousand times more dangerous.

They are cold and emotionless, almost without a soul.

That describes the mother, not the child; in this particular instance. I've seen the child smile...the mother? Not so much.

I have a 17 year old grandchild sho is severely autistic. He was developing normally until he was given a rash of vaccines by his pediatrician (when he was one and a half years old) in preparation for a family move from Ohio to NJ.

You can look at the family videos and see an engaged, normal little boy assume the dis-engaged look of an autistic practically over night. He’s been to all kinds of special schools and undergone all kinds of therapies, but I haven’t see a lot of progress over the years. My daughter definitely blames the vaccines.

What I don’t get is why the vaccine supporters are so adament in their denials? Nobody is asking to have the vaccines denied — only to have them separated (MMR, Dip-Per-Tet) and spaced. IOW, Mumps one month and Measles 6 weeks later. Perhaps given at a slightly older age. My daughter (and all my other children) did that with my other grandchildren with no ill effects. But, it always requires an argument with the medical personnel.

What/who are the nay-sayers trying to protect?

no, it hasn’t been “thoroughly discredited”

I am regretting having had my kids get all those dumb shots.

“We had vaccines as kids and we don’t have autism.”

My children had DPT, Smllpox, and Polio at ages 5 & 6. Children nowdays are barraged with several vaccines before they are even released from the hospital. They have MMR and hepatitis and I don't know all what else. My kids had a chance to recover between vaccines.

To: To-Whose-Benefit?

Since doing a bit of research on the incredible increase of autism diagnosis...my best guess is that it IS psychotropic drugs in the ground water...and that is what is affecting kids.

Has anybody seen the numbers on the increase in autism in 3rd world countries where anti-depressants, adhd drugs, etc... are rarely, if ever used? My guess is that there has been no increase...but maybe one of you has some hard info to share.

What is different about vaccines today than when we were growing up?

The number and the types of shots.

I don’t discount vaccines being a major factor. When we were young, we rarely if ever came across someone with autism. Now days, there are many autistic students in our kids’ classes. It’s obvious that something is going on for such a rapid rise.

1 in 8 is horrific. There has to be a reason why there’s such a spike in cases in your area. Are the kids diagnosed with autism of the same age? If so, then it’s very possible it’s from a bad batch or too many vaccines given. Did they ever have the same doctor or clinic? Maybe tampering of the doses? If their ages vary drastically, then it could be environmental. Has there been environmental testings? Does the drinking water have high levels of toxins? The local produce or milk may have far too many chemicals during production. Or some nearby factory is emmitting poisonous gasses. Perhaps a company is secretly dumping toxic waste that leaching into the soil where the children play or into the water. Does everyone buy home decor from the same companies? Like everyone in the neighborhood buys their couches at the same furniture store or they buy their carpet from the same flooring store. Do they use the same carpet cleaning service or the same lawn treatment service or the same pest treatment?

I know for a fact that pest sprays can do a real number on your body. We had used a bug bomb and were sick constantly for six months. We’d go to the doctor but would be fine in his office but back home we’d be sick again. It was the longest before we realized that after a while of being outside the house we were fine but inside we were sick. We were so sick that we couldn’t get out much so that’s what took us so long in realizing what was happening. We normal clean our carpets ourselves but were too weak to do it so called in a carpet cleaner to do the carpets and upholstry but their new employee mixed their formula wrong so we came down with different symptoms. The bug junk was gone but now it was the carpet junk. After several cleanings with clear water, we were well again. I can only imagine if adults went through all that, then what would all those chemicals do to little kids.

I suspect that the sprays used on pecan trees where I grew up is the cause of so many in a certain age group to being diagnosed with infertility problems. When there’s a high number of problems within a small area, then it’s something that’s being done in that geographic area that’s the problem.

In the US at least, there are likely three factors all combining for the increase in autism diagnoses: 1) The definition of autism was officially broadened to include a whole ‘spectrum’, whereas it was once a very limited and extreme diagnosis. 2) There is funding now for both schools and parents with kids given the diagnosis, which has encouraged parents of children with all kinds of developmental, behavioral and mental disorders to seek an autism diagnosis—and professionals to give one.

Right on the money. However, are you aware that the criteria to be found eligible for special education services will be changed in the next year or so? I'll bet dollars to donuts that the numbers of children on the spectrum will drop dramatically. It will be interesting to see who takes the credit.

I don’t discount vaccines and other environmental factors for the dramatic increase in autism cases in my neighborhood but another factor, at least in my neighborhood is the school district I live in has a very good program for autistic kids. Maybe families with autistic kids move to areas where they can get better services for their kids. Or maybe since my grandson is severely autistic I just am more aware of autism.

Yes. It is sad when a child must suffer for the ignorant superstitions and imaginings of his parents.
