phlegm is perfectly couth, there are far more uncouth ways of saying it; loogie, and hawker being two that come to my mind from public school bus days.
One does not discuss bodily functions or secretions at the dinner table.

Touching The Queen of England as if she is your pal, is the ultimate display of being gauche. Yes, it was Michelle Antoinette who did that.
Putting up your hand to wave, in a picture containing many heads of state, thus blocking out the face of someone next to you in the picture, is gauche. Mr.Sensitive Barry Soetoro did that.
(These are small but revealing incidents that all FReepers are aware of, but the masses remain ignorant of anything and everything from Fast and Furious to Intel leaks to Billions given to our enemies. These are the voters. God help us all.)
I love the old Steve Martin stuff.

We used to have his book of short stories “Cruel Shoes” circa 1970’s. Also had a cassette of comedy and music. Both long gone but probably still available if I’d look on Amazon.

My nephew once used his iPod “fart collection app” at a family holiday dinner. His great grama gave him “The Look” and was not amused. The rest of us LOL’ed. Hey, it was after dinner. We’re not total cretins!

The Obamas are so totally gauche
They make the Clintons look refined-

I had a couple of his records on 8 track way back when. Some of the lines are still good to throw out there when you get the opportunity.
It’s like those French have a different word for everything.

At least once a year I play that Steve Martin clip from SNL where he does his “If I had one wish this Christmas season” it’s hilarious.
