Does It Matter If the Heroine of 'Brave' Is Gay?
The Atlantic ^ | June 26, 2012 | Chris Heller

Merida, the heroine of Pixar's Brave, doesn't want to marry. Not now, she repeatedly tells her mother, Queen Elinor, and perhaps not ever. Faced with the prospect of being forced to wed one of a trio of loutish suitors, she runs away from home in search of some way to change the "fate" she was born into. That's the radical thing about Brave: Merida is a Disney princess who doesn't want a prince.

She also happens to be a tomboy, a tough and sporty archer who would rather be riding her horse than wearing a dress. On Sunday, Entertainment Weekly's Adam Markovitz used these details to draw a connection between Brave—which racked up $66 million over the weekend—and another event in the news:

If she had any other love interest in the film, as opposed to the suitors her parents chose, it would not only fundamentally change the film to be about the secret (or forbidden) love vs the arranged marriage, and would have been one giant cliche.

Granted, given Pixar's track record, it would have been one beautifully produced cliche, but a cliche nonetheless.

Assuming through stereotypes that she's a lesbian is just as cliche these days.

So when Jerry Falwell said the purple Teletubby was gay, the media ridiculed him for looking for homosexuality in a kid’s show.

For the record, Falwell made the statement in 1999 and was over two years late to that party.

By December 24, 1997, CNN aired the following:

"The Teletubbies also have a following among the gay community. Tinky Winky, who carts around a red handbag but speaks with a male voice, has become something of a gay icon."

The Village Voice had already praised Teletubbies for having a gay character. There were other media notes about TInky Winky. When Falwell entered the mix, a couple of years late, it was as if nobody had ever brought up the subject before.

This is ridiculous! I’ll take a Disney tomboy over an author like this any day!

I saw the movie with my wife and kids this weekend and did not leave the movie with this impression at all. Weird how they have to try and ruin the movie. Go see it. It is a great movie and you will enjoy it.

The key to “being Salamander” is NEVER growing up.

[if you ‘grow up’, you grow old and you die]

Do not go gently into that dark night...go out redlining and screaming the whole way.

;D

Haven’t seen the movie yet but Merida is alright by me.

[substitute a .22 for a crossbow and she may as well be me]

Stupidest thing I ever did was break my vow to never get married.

LOL

Hi back at ya, PA neighbor. Thanks for your service. I can say that I love men, and I even say it to their face. I say it all the time and get away with it because I’m an old lady. There is great freedom in growing old. You are allowed to say whatever you want. I tell handsome men that they are handsome and that if I was younger they would be in trouble. Everybody likes to be complimented and made to feel important. I am most disappointed in the women of today. they are a whiny bunch. Mostly empty headed (speaking of liberals of course).

I want to be Salamander when I grow up. LOL!!

You and me both mom. That girl is something. She put the idea of a Trik in my head and I haven't been able to shake the idea. My hubby thinks I've lost my mind because I keep wishing for one. I can see where a motorcycle would be a problem for me at my age, but a trik would be great. I'm not giving up the dream of having one. Just waiting for that inheritance that never comes. I'm an adventurous soul.

The one ‘sexuality’ issue that still makes me laugh is PETER PAN. Not a guy, not a girl, not really any sex at all. American Society is so funny. It’s the repression of ‘sex’ that causes much of the deviancy.

Peter Pan was written by a Scottish author and takes place in London and Neverland, never America. And he's a boy.

What sick minds to be so obsessed with finding something homo in everything. I guess Elizabeth I is a candidate to be a lesbo too.

Homosexuals are starting to believe their Democrat sponsored publicity. While I believe they are born that way, they are not mainstream.

Oops, so sorry Salamander. I forgot to ping you to my answer to momofthree. I agree, don’t go gently. I keep defying the odds and staying involved. Driving to KY Sat. to a re-enactor gathering. Haven’t decided whether or not I will spend the night at Wolfpen Woods (google) at my cabin (I am Mrs.Benjamin Ulen). My family can’t see the fun in that. Stuffy old kids never want to be without cell phones or I-Pods. Can’t imagine just being in a peaceful place away from civilization communing with the snakes, bugs and frogs. I dig it. Time travel to 1795.

My parents are *still* trying to get a dress on me, talk me into getting an ‘age approriate hairstyle” [WTH is *that*??] and stop climbing fences, clambering over rocks, ‘wear sensible, modest shoes’ and the whole bit.

HELL NO!

I’m still skinny enough and limber enough to get away with it all so I bloody well WILL.

[if it weren’t for their incessant nagging, I never would’ve broken my “never get married” vow, either]

So, Nan...wanna go field herping with me or slip down to the crick so we can sit on the rocks midstream and watch the minnows play?

[hubby ‘dealt with that’ a few days ago for about 40 minutes until he started blowing the horn...hee hee...he couldn’t come fetch me because he didn’t know where to cross the crick without falling in and I was *just* far enough away to ignore his yells]

The only good reason to put a dress on a girl is so you can take it off her later.

Gutsy, spunky tomboys have been around in fiction for a long time.

It's only now that people assume they're lesbians or destined to become such.

That's the context nowadays, though, and it's going to become more unavoidable if things go on as they have.

Game of Thrones has a similar character, and yeah, some times you wonder, though in years past no one would have.
