An indie developer working on a new version of its signature title for Microsoft's new tablet said its compatibility with the Xbox 360 controllers presents some interesting advantages for the player and new challenges for designers.
Creative director Jake Kazdal and the rest of the crew at 17-Bit (formerly Haunted Temple Games) are prepping their turn-based strategy title Skulls of the Shogun for the Microsoft Surface, according to a blog post on Wired's GameLife. Kazdal said players can control their game with the touchscreen display, a mouse and even an Xbox 360 controller, thanks to the USB port provided by the Surface.
Apple's iPad may have become a gaming juggernaut for players and budding developers with its App Store, but only third party developers have offered game controllers such as the iCade and Gametel Portable. Kazdal said having a USB port on the new tablet can bring a wave of new gamers that the iPad may have been ignoring for some time.
"There are a lot of people that don't like playing mobile games," Kazdal told us by phone. "They like controllers and buttons but the fact that we now have a tablet with traditional game controllers will be more appealing to the core gaming audience."
Now the addition of controller compatibility can turn the tablet into a portable console. Kazdal and company have been building their title on a Windows 7 Slate PC, which he said is "basically what the Surface is" and he said he has played his studio's game during development on a controller. He said it "works beautifully."
