Roll-your-own cigarette stores going up in smoke
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 4, 2012 | Emily Morris

Posted on 07/04/2012 7:43:52 PM PDT by Graybeard58

For smokers who bargained on roll-your-own cigarette stores for cheap smokes, it looks like those days are numbered.

On Friday, President Barack Obama is expected to sign into law a federal highway bill with a section that redefines tobacco manufacturers to include any business with a roll-your-own cigarette machine and taxes those products at the same rate as packaged smokes.

The move comes a month after Illinois increased taxes on such roll-your-own machine-made cigarettes.

Marcia Smith, 47, of Lake County, decided after the state tax increase that she should move her Smokes & Such tobacco shops in Skokie and Gurnee to Wisconsin, where taxes on rolled cigarettes are lower.

If Obama signs the law, she said she’ll shut her doors.

The machines, which cost about $33,000 each, allow customers to pick their own tobacco and pour it into a device that can roll the tobacco into a carton, or about 200 cigarettes, within minutes.

Seems like a perfectly natural place for the fedguv to redefine what it means to be a tobacco manufacturer. My disdain for the administration and the GOP congress who passed the bill knows no bounds.

Taxes were NOT raised on ‘pipe tobacco’.
RYO and MYO cigs will cost the same as before- about 1/6 the price of pre-made in my experience.

It’s a shame these people will be put out of business.
I’m glad my smoke shop didn’t take the risk of buying one of these machines.

While it sounds nice to blame the current resident and congress, this $#!t has been going on for decades, centuries even.

The only way to stop it is to amend the Constitution that forbids the practice. No more riders.

I had too much time on my hands one night and I calculated how many packs of smokes would fit in a semi-truck van.

Van; 576” long (48’), 110” high (inside), 102” wide (prolly 98” inside width). Over 6 million cubic inches and an ave. pack of smokes is 5.85 ci.

One of these vans would hold about a million packs.

Lots of maoney rolling down the highway.

“The only way to stop it is to amend the Constitution that forbids the practice.”

The problem in a democracy is you get a majority that thinks something is the right thing to do or they just want to do it, the minority is constantly getting screwed. They shouldn’t ban something unless it’s an unlabeled poison.

Yes, amend the constitution, if possible!

If you tobacco and have it shipped to avoid taxes, DO NOT SHIP UPS!!! Kalifornia, and probably some other states, have extorted UPS to have them report shipments from tobacco sellers to any address in the state. The state will then send you a tax bill for the products you bought.

I had a friend buying cigars from out of state, and he got a bill from the Franchise Tax Board for several thousand dollars. UPS ratted him out.

Not sure. As I understand it, they use private or small shippers. FedEx and UPS voluntarily don’t ship cigarets and the post office is prohibited by law.

Warning: Be VERY careful buying cigarettes online:

Look what happened to this man.....

William Blakemore is a pack-a-day smoker in Hightstown, N.J., who started buying cigarettes online several years ago. His goal: avoid his state's cigarette tax, which has tripled since 2002 to $2.40 a pack, the nation's second highest.

But the bill suddenly came due last week when Blakemore opened his mail and found a claim from New Jersey for $1,842.79 in back taxes from his Internet purchases.

Blakemore, 55, an unemployed computer programmer, has been buying Benson & Hedges online for $29 a carton, compared with the $50-$60 he would have paid at a convenience store or supermarket. The tax notice, he says, "kind of raised the adrenaline level. That got my dander up."

Blakemore is one of thousands of smokers getting letters from state and local tax collectors demanding they pay up for their Internet purchases.

The governments want the taxes to support budgets that are stretched thin and to level the playing field for conventional retailers, who must collect taxes on every pack sold.

Smokers increasingly are turning to the Internet because state and local taxes in some areas account for more than half the cost of cigarettes.

People who evade cigarette taxes by buying online are part of a broader pattern in Internet commerce...........

This was EIGHT years ago. Imagine what it is now.

Read the REST of the story here....

I got busted yesterday for a traffic stop.
Yeah I rolled stop sign on a smoke break that I put on extra hour a day on the clock to cover.

So I head out for a 5 min smoke break off of the company property on my own time and I rolled a stop sign trying to get back in 5 min.

Next thing I know I have the highway patrol and the company security on my ass.

All I wanted was a ciggy on my OWN TIME off in the woods.
Now I’m a Criminale

They started tobbcoco tax to cover smokers health costs, now its Childrens Health Costs.

Allegedly, the huge lawsuit was for the added costs of health care for smokers, too. Did so much as a dime of any of that money ever go to pay a smoker's doctor bills?

But now, under Obambicare, you not only get to pick up the tab for smoker's lungs, but HIV, AIDS, HepC, alcohol rehab, drug rehab, and other serologically transferred and/or "lifestyle" diseases.

Ain't Socialism grand?

In the meantime, they'll keep raking in the other 'taxes', too.

Precisely. Note, you don't have to smoke, the bar on tobacco was moved to include smokeless tobacco as well. Even though it is easier on the lungs...

You get to pay extra as a "tobacco user" for everything from car insurance to health and life insurance, even homeowner's insurance, even if you don't smoke.

Nothing fair about it. There was a two pronged push to get everyone to pick up the medical bills for AIDS, the gay "marriage" thing (which confers benefits of one 'spouse' upon the other, such as insurance from an employer), and Obamacare, which will penalize us 'breeders' for the ills of perverts.

Either way, straight folks get to pay for the ravages of 'lifestyles' not their own. That doesn't even touch on operations surgically converting the confused to a cheap imitation of a different gender.

And then there is picking up the tab for the murder of the unborn...
