Beautiful My neighbor and good friend delivered barker brothers furniture in So Cal always took his camera on his daily runs its amazing what photos he would come home with
Nice pics!
After all these years, I still have trouble with a lot of hawk ID. Some of the easy ones (e.g., red tails, merlins, sparrow hawks, Mississippi kites, etc.) are not a problem for me. Many of the other ones, well, that’s a different story.
The juveniles can be really tricky to ID.
Awwwwww! Did this little one think you were his Mommy? Too cute, Swampy! The picture is amazing. I hope all went well at the Doctors!! Hugs, Mom
what wonderful pictures. Wish you were closer. We have a barn swallow nesting above our front door...Well, we do live in a barn.
LOL! I’ve heard the term “yard baby” used in a MUCH different manner than what you’ve assumed here.
When I was in college, I had a family living downstairs from me who were always fighting about something. One day I came home from class, and one of the older woman’s kid’s stuff was sitting in a bag outside of the building door with a note that read, “Go be a yard baby, you *expletive*.”
I always took it to mean a kid whose parents kicked him/her out of the house.
Beautiful pictures, BTW. You’re in FL, no?
Beautiful!
This is a beautiful picture.
The other day, in my yard, a large bird plummeted out of the sky to the ground. A battle ensued, after which the bird flew off into my woods. The bird looked very similar to this, except it was gray, instead of red. I didn’t move while the bird was there as I didn’t want to frighten it off. I didn’t get a better view than what I’ve told you. Sorry. :(
Any ideas as to what type it is? FWIW, I live in east central AL, about 45 miles from the GA border (Auburn, to be specific).
A fun post, thanks. We have them all over the place here too. Red Shouldered Hawks, Red Tailed Hawks, Coopers Hawks, all sorts of birds of prey. Golden Eagles, Falcons....we keep the cats contained under cover, and indoors.
Good to understand you are doing well after your surgery.
A gray back may be a Cooper’s Hawk.
Thanks. I’ll be watching and keeping that in mind.
I like hawks however the only one I owned was a 1962 Studebaker, the birds are nice too.
I did a quick google search. I think you are right, and it was a juvenile because the head was speckled as well as the body. The underside was clearly seen as it flew off and everything I just read fits with what I saw. Thank you so much. You have solved a mystery.
Did you feed him anything?
It could have been a hawk. There was a big grey one sitting on the street sign on the corner of my neighbor’s yard. He carves birds, and I would have loved to have had a picture of it. I had my NEW cell phone with me, but didn’t know how to use the camera feature. When I told my neighbor about it, his son showed me how to use the camera. Of course, I haven’t seen the beautiful, grey/white hawk again.
Its coloring was between this http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=hawks&view=detail&id=FAAB5DBA593CE37BD38C9AD5C84E8D5033D5482E&first=351
Great clicks SS!
Also, check out this Osprey video from last year, I think. Quite some meals.
