Obama told to back off U.N. gun treaty
WND ^ | 4/4/2012 | Jack Minor

Posted on 07/05/2012 3:56:01 PM PDT by Beave Meister

Over 100 members of Congress appear to share the concerns of a former Army general who has sounded the alarm over efforts by the Obama Administration to push through the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, or ATT.

As WND reported, retired Lt. Gen. William Boykin earlier this year, in a video in which he claimed Obama was leading America down the path of a quiet, Marxist revolution, blasted the ATT, also known as the small arms treaty, saying it would regulate private gun ownership.

“There has been a decree by the administration by the president and the secretary of state saying that our president will sign the United Nations small arms treaty, which is about how we will buy sell and control individual private weapons,” Boykin warned. “That means the United Nations, an international body will decide how you and I as Americans can buy and sell our weapons, how we control those weapons, who is authorized to have those weapons and where they are. This is a dangerous trend.”

Now some 130 lawmakers, consisting of mostly Republicans, but also including Democrats such as Reps. Jason Altmire, Sanford Bishop, Jerry Costello, Danny Davis and Peter DeFazio sent off a letter to the Obama administration opposing the treaty.

How many guns in the US? 100 million? How many rounds of ammo are there? Billions? Good luck with that UN.

His signature on the paper is absolutely meaningless unless the Senate ratifies the treaty. IIRC, ratification will take a 2/3 majority and I would hope would be impossible to achieve.

There has been a decree by the administration? When did Obama get the power to decree anything? Is everybody crazy?

Decree. Isn't that what a King does?

Obama carved his name in this cement while a student in Indonesia.

If I not mistaken only the Senate can ratify a treaty which is hardly likely to happen....

Article II, Section 2
He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur;

Anybody think 66 senators are going to ratify this treaty...?

Obama can decree anything he wants, but it’s got no teeth....

When faced with the fact that your senators are Boxer and Feinstein, a Californian can only hope that other senators can be made to feel enough heat to defeat this treaty. Boxer and Feinstein are both lost causes on anything regarding gun control.

General Boykin.

He spoke at my church a few months ago.

A most impressive man. He does, indeed, “get it”.

My understanding is that it takes a 2/3 majority vote of who is in attendance for the vote. So if O wants to push it through he can covertly schedule the vote....

I wouldn’t put it past him...

So if O wants to push it through he can covertly schedule the vote....

So, the vote is scheduled for some well-chosen moment, it gets "legally" passed and then the Repubs can safely say "Oh well, it was all done according to the constitution. We don't like it one little bit but we'll just have to live with it now."

I would hope tha the reruns would be smart enough to not allow this scenario.

Over the past couple of days there have been conflicting reports on this treaty and how it will effect gun control. Who do you believe? Certainly not the UN..
