How do they count the college grads who are now looking for work? Must be a lot of them.

According to the government's logic if they have never had a job, then they cannot be unemployed. New grads don't show up on the statistics. In addition the guy with a four year degree who gets a job a Burger King for minimum wage counts as fully employed.

“According to the government’s logic if they have never had a job, then they cannot be unemployed. New grads don’t show up on the statistics.”

Nonsense. The Current Population Survey asks people if they are actively looking for work. If they are, they are considered unemployed even if they are newly minted college grads. Their previous work experience is completely irrelevant in determining whether they are unemployed at the time of the survey. http://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm

Then how does that jibe with people running out of unemployment no longer being counted? I’m sure some of those people are looking for work still.

“Then how does that jibe with people running out of unemployment no longer being counted?”

If you read the link, you would see it doesn’t. The measured unemployment rate has nothing to do with how many people receive UE insurance since a) not every unemployed person qualifies for UE insurance; and b) even though who do may exhaust their benefits. This is why for decades, BLS has relied on a survey to count the number of unemployed.

Now, it’s true that the survey method has flaws. For example, people who are in the underground economy or use SS disability insurance as a form of unemployment may not honestly report their work status (e.g., people on disability insurance can qualify only if they are work-disabled, hence may be reluctant to report to the feds that they actually are looking for work or have some form of gainful employment: in that case, they’ll show up as “work-disabled” even if they aren’t). But the same basic methods of counting the UE have been used for decades.

That photo! Laughing! 0bama primly sips while the woman pounds down her brew right out of the bottle. To me, these pictures of him trying to look like a regular person always fall flat because he’s such a phony and the pictures only magnify that fact.

The long-term unemployed are the walking dead. No one will look at you.
