The West Virginia Record explains what happened during the May 23 hearing, which was called to settle a discrepancy over Hage and his wife selling their house:
Shortly after the hearing started, Watkins, calmly, said, “Mr. Hage, if you say one word out of turn, you’re going to jail. Do you understand me?”
To which Hage replied, “Yes.”
Then, Watkins berated Hage for speaking to a reporter following the previous day’s hearing. On May 22, Watkins heard a motion made by [his wife] Lillian’s attorney, Christine Wallace with Legal Aid of West Virginia, that Arthur be held in contempt for speaking with third parties about Lillian’s mental health in violation of the “permanent” protective order Watkins included in their final divorce order.
After that, Watkins accused Hage of being responsible for an article that appeared later that day on a Putnam County news site regarding Watkins and his wife, Rhonda, receiving a letter in the Fall from their homeowner’s association ...
When Hage attempted to say something, Watkins screamed, “Shut up! Did I tell you to speak?”
“You put up a picture of my house,” he continued. “Because of you, my wife is there alone, and my house has been vandalized four times. You realize that, of course, as I‘m sure you’re probably in on it and laughing about it.” ...
“Well, buddy, it’s personal. It’s personal, and I can promise you, you will not hear the end of if from me.”

“You’re personally responsible,” Watkins said. “Please understand that. I will resign this bench and I will personally see to it that you never see a free day in your life.
“Do you understand? You’re going to jail,” he added. “I swear to God.

yea... that judge shouldn’t recuse himself... he’s *totally* impartial
Wonder what the back story on this actually is.
I am seeing more and more around the country reports like this one. The Judges and to a close degree lawyers have really presented to the public at large that they are above the law. With Judges in particular though this appearance is very dangerous. We have granted them privileges beyond all others because they are supposed to be impartial and leave emotion out of their verdicts aka ‘Judgements’.
However when their Political, Religious or any other ‘Beliefs’ come into conflict with a case they are supposed to be neutral and impartial over and they don’t recuse themselves then their impartiality is questioned. And rightly so.
Now, when their judgements are so out-of-whack with the law and the facts surrounding the cases presented to them it becomes paramount that the citizenry remove them from the bench.

I stopped the hearing at that point to consult with my attorney, who did not object to that assertion, and ended the whole thing prepared to take the lumps I was going to get whether it went on or not. I estimate that I saved myself the remainder of the attorney's fees for myself and my ex.
That egotistical SOB judge is drunk with power. I don’t care how emotional he feels about whatever happened. When he is up for re-election this tape should be played over and over. It is VERY unprofessional for him to behave like this. What a jackass.
The Judge can’t go after the media for the story about him, so he pretends Haige put the story together.
I believe the Judge’s actions are sufficiently extreme so as to protect Haige from retribution.
He needs to be impeached. He threatened the man from the bench!

Strangely enough, I am just about over it now. That was 1993/4 and she has passed away from respiratory complications brought on by her hypochondriac abuse and self medications. My son had to live through it all and I just did everything I could to give him the reassurances I would be there for him when he needed me.
He is a young adult now and we have a good relationship I am happy to say. As for the Judge, I could care less about him. He will have his own demons to face when that time comes along.
