Churchill, puffing on cigar and wearing dashing aviator glasses while being tailed by the Luftwaffe.

It was the perilous 18-hour flight which saw Britain's wartime Prime Minister fly back from America while being hunted by the German Luftwaffe. Winston Churchill had flown back across the Atlantic in 1942 after lobbying President Roosevelt over the Allied Forces' strategy against Hitler. And given the flight risks and importance of the discussions, the long-haul voyage back to Britain was one of the most significant of the Second World War. Now a rare family archive has captured the intimate moments of Churchill's flight, including pictures of the wartime leader at the controls of the Boeing Clipper flying boat RAM 'Berwick'.

I'm not sure if Sir Winston actually flew the plane or was just sitting in the cockpit enjoying the view and his cigar. Still what a bad *ass.

Churchill was a pilot, but not a very good one. I’m sure he’d have asked to be allowed to fly it for a time.

I'm not sure what can top than considering all the places he has been to be but resigning as First Lord of the Admirality after Gallopi then leading a battalion in the trenches in Flanders is hard to comprehend in today's world.

Ya know I was thinking....Winston Churchill’s mother was a natural born American… …of course his father was a Brit. and Winny was born in....Hawaii...yeah that’s the ticket Hawaii....now that means that the British Bulldog was really an American Pit Bull...and believe you me he would have made a better POTUS than socialist FDR any friggin’ day.

This flight was in January 1942. What is amazing about the picture is how young Churchill looked. If someone coild do a side by side of one of these pics, with one of Winston taken at the end of WW II, some 3 years later, you can see that he has aged, well 30 years. The strain and stress must have been awful.

Roosevelt opposed Churchill’s plan to rid central Europe of Russian control. Roosevelt was enamored of Stalin and gave him the eastern bloc, resulting in a tyranny and a cold war that lasted 40 years.

While true, there were a lot of things at work there. Churchill wanted to defeat Germany by encircling them and ultimately marching on Berlin from all sides, including the east. The advantage of this plan was that it would put most of Europe under U.S./English control - freezing out the Soviets. The down side is that it was goign to take much longer and consume more resources.

On the other hand, Roosevelt knew he had a limited amount of time to finish the war in Europe so that he still had time to take the war to Japan before the American people began to sour on the war. He therefore favored the direct approach to Berlin, even if it meant ceding Eastern Europe to the Soviets.
