Word For The Day, Thursday, July 19 & 26, 2012 - paronymous
dictionaries, books, usual sources | 19 July 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

paronymous \puh-RON-uh-muhs\, adjective
Containing the same root or stem, as the words wise and wisdom.

Example sentences:
The sentence seems to reverberate with echoes of assonance—another distinctive trait of Haweke's writing often enriched with alliterative patterns or even rhymes—on both sides of the two central words: "pale petal," whose juxtaposition involves an anagramatical and paronymous variation.
-- Heide Ziegler, Facing Texts

This in itself is a significant achievement in a language so flowery and paronymous to the extent that exaggeration, especially at that time of its literary history, is widely considered to be one of its inherent characteristics.
-- Sabry Hafez, The Quest for Identities

Etymology:
Paronymous stems from the Greek roots para- meaning "beside" and onoma meaning "a name."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I'll be out of town next week so since this day is more than half over, it will count for this Thursday and next Thursday.

But you-know-who does have a stem and amuses the ladies so.

Alas, as Drudge put it, “Weiner pulls out.”

Back from doing a futile bid for a feckles customer-she was already trying to come up with ways not to pay me-I finally told her I just couldn’t do the job with the materials she wants for what she wanted to pay...

No matter what Obama spins
To please the chasttering classes
It is paronymous with socialism
To please the unwashed masses

Just when you’ve gotten tired
Of what we’ve heard before
The con man in chief comes out
And says “but wait-theres more!”

He’s stolen and spent our money
On his attempts to be king-
Time to send him home to Chicago
Where they do that sort of thing

A perfect word for the post-modern nonsense like that of Heide Ziegler. Are you promoting it?

Speaking of time, it's only 3:17 p.m. EDT here in New Jersey. Is FreeRepublic now set to Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean Time? Maybe I can find out the lottery numbers an hour or two in advance.

Early this morning I hiked up on the next hill to take my neighbor some fresh herbs from my herb bed, as promised. She opened the door as soon as she saw me walking up the drive-Venus dashed past her, ran up and knocked the basket of herbs out of my hand, and started rolling on the fallen basil in ecstacy, as if it were catnip or something-the air was completely saturated with the smell of crushed basil. Neither of us had ever seen a dog do such a thing with herbs-I’m completely mystified...

Obama, Soetoro, pseudonymous
A pen name to keep him anonymous
A socialist type
A$$hole, or A$$wipe
Descriptive, on point and paronymous

So I’m not the only one seeing the wrong time on this thread-it is only 2:33 p.m. (central time) here. FR must be on Twilight Zone time or something.

You’re a sucker for big brown eyes. I liked her as a kid, because she was smart, but not obnoxious about it.
