Skip to comments. The mystery of James Holmes' missing Facebook account

"I am not a 24-year-old gun-slinging killer from Aurora," James P. Holmes wrote on Facebook Friday morning. Holmes is a Denver man who shares first and last names with the suspect in the deadly shooting that took place at a midnight screening of the latest Batman movie, just hours before, James Eagan Holmes.
As the investigation got under way in the shooting at the "The Dark Knight Rises" premiere, in which 70 members of the estimated 300-seat crowd were killed or injured, those looking for clues to make sense of it all went online for a digital footprint for the suspect - to no avail.
It appears that the suspect Holmes is not on any social networks - at least not under his legal name. The picture of Holmes that has been painted is not much different than a typical, perhaps disenchanted college student.
...The reasons why Holmes would get dressed in all black, a ballistic helmet and tactical gloves and walk into that AMC Theater early Friday morning and open fire on innocent people remain a mystery.
If he was on Facebook, we might know what's been on his mind, what he had for dinner or how he spent the Fourth of July, offering insight into his mental state ahead of the events, but Holmes is not found on that social network, or Twitter. He doesn't have a website or blog. Unconfirmed reports late Friday allege that he may have been on the dating site AdultFriendFinder.com, not a forum most would choose to connect with friends, family or the greater public.
The fact that Holmes is not online perplexed denizens of the Internet throughout the day, invoking some to message people with similar names, create fake Facebook profiles and even write articles pondering why Holmes...presented no presence online.

Maybe the powers that be scrubbed it because he is a leftist loon OWS tree hugging fag sexual with penis envy and 9th puppy syndrome global warming murderer
Many people set up sock puppet accounts to hide their real identities on social forums. This is not all that uncommon.
He may not have had any accounts although I find that somewhat hard to believe.
We have Voth deleted our FB accounts. They serve no useful purpose for us.
I Don’t think we are being told the truth. I think he is a muzzie.
Could be, more likely a OWSer.
They interviewed a lab tech that worked with him who said he spent most of his computer time with online role-playing games.
I looked this morning. There are hundreds and hundreds of James Holmes listed, many don’t have location or use something other than a picture of themselves as a profile picture so it will be hard to go through. It might be near impossible to determine which one his is depending on his personal security settings.
...also, we can chalk this up to more poor investigation by CBS in claiming he wasn’t on Facebook considering how many James Holmes were on Facebook. The most they can say is they don’t know, not that he wasn’t there.
And on what exactly are you basing this assumption? There is absolutely nothing about his background or his actions, at least that we know of so far, that indicates this is the case. If he was some sort of Muslim terrorist, I would think he would have shouted Allah Akbar before opening fire (and first hand witnesses would have heard and reported that) and would have had a body bomb and blown himself up and or gone down in a blaze of glory in order to be a Martyr.
To me he sounds like a very classic case of a schizophrenic very bright academically, on a path to leading a successful life, once friendly and engaged, but sometime in his mid-twenties, suddenly has trouble in school, drops out, has trouble holding a job, becomes more and more withdrawn, increasingly fixated on a fantasy world.
You do know that not everyone who commits mass murder is a muzzie or has any clear political motivation for doing so. There are some people who just go crazy. Everything Ive read so far seems to indicate he was crazy or more precisely suffering from a brain disease like schizophrenia.
Some like to look to vast conspiracies or underlying reasons when these things happen. In truth sometimes a person who commits this sort of heinous and senseless act, is just plain crazy.
Unfortunately there were probably many signs that this guy was becoming unhinged; his own mother was seemingly unsurprised that her son committed this crime; the university where he worked in the medical research lab, dismissed him last month and turned off his access card to the university facilities. I think it will come out that all the warning signs were there that this guy was very sick and presented a danger to others but sadly involuntary commitment to a mental hospital is very difficult of not impossible to obtain.
Isn’t there a schizophrenia that hits young men (mostly) in their late teens and early twenties? Tends to be inherited? Unless they take their medications regularly, they go off and become violent, especially close family. It’s difficult to force them to take the medication, as they are of age.
Don't get sucked in, MD Expat. The marygonzo id (joined a few weeks ago) is obviously some dipshit trying to make Freepers look like knuckle-dragging reactionaries.
What say you, mary?
Spot on. I just read through “Mary”’s in forum comments. Stinks of troll.
He sure does.
I would agree with everything you said except this, “very bright academically”. Mark Levin said last night that he was struggling in grad school and was most likely going to fail out.
Not at all.Neither my husband nor myself have Facebook.Listening to people at work who have it it seems like a huge waste of time.If I want to connect w/ someone I will call them.
I think this whole thing about living so much of your life in public is not healthy.
Wonder if they drug tested him that night?
Perhaps I should have said until recently. He had been an honors student at UC Riverside. I understand he was in the process of withdrawing from the Ph.D. program in Colorado but so far the university hasnt given much detail as to what that meant was it truly voluntary?
I had a Facebook account, deleted the bugger the best I could.
Damm thing tracks you everywhere.
The guy sounds like a recent convert to the OWS Black Bloc, of which some will say is the brainchild of the Muslim Brotherhood in America.
Yes - he also took many AP courses in high school and apparently passed with flying colors and was granted multiple merit scholarships. It sounds like he was above average in intelligence at an earlier time!
I’ve never had a Facebook account. I’m online in a bunch of places, but never under my real name. I like being free to express controversial, politically-incorrect opinions without real-world harassment.
Has anyone noticed that there is little/no information yet about his family? I am curious if he has siblings, what his parents do for a living, etc. etc.
Lucky guy. Now everybody wants to friend him on Fakebook, everybody wants to know about his family friends siblings, you can bet that marriage proposals will flow to him like an Amazon river. What’s wrong with use people? Tabloid much?
Some people think they can hide their identity because they are on Facebook under a false name and with a fake picture. They forget that their set of friends can uniquely identify them.
Somebody is going to be searching for the facebook identities of his relatives, co-workers, and classmates and looking for commonality. Probably on LinkedIn and similar sites too.
It’s often recommended that aspiring professionals steer clear of social networking as prospective employees can track that and might find something to discredit you.
His father, Robert M. Holmes, sr. is or was employed with FICO, having a background in neuroscience and a string of impressive degrees. His mother, Arlene Rosemary (no maiden name provided thus far) Holmes remains something of a cipher, little info on her. No info onmthe “Junior” implied by the “Senior,” eirher. Family is described as simply “churchgoing,” very vague.
Didn’t Anders Breivik spend an enormous amount of time playing online role playing games?
If Facebook serves no useful purpose, then any type of role playing game serves no purpose either.
The trouble with a FB account is it basically invites you to undress in public. Then, at the worst possible time, your worst enemy is going to be able to use something you’ve posted against you. I have one so I can access FB but have posted nothing about myself on it and do not intend to do so.
He was a Phi Beta Kappa in undergrad and one of the top students in high school.
Something went bad in his head the last year for sure.
Indeed. Nor will I. Nor Twitter, MySpace or any of the other ridiculaous, narcisisstic social media sites.
I know for a fact that no one cares what inane thoughts cross my mind every moment of the day and I certainly don't care about anyone else's.
Very bright something doesn’t add up why he stumbled recently.
