Thank you Barack Obama

I am a 62 year old engineer who is wheelchair bound. I just got laid off from my job, and I have applied to like 50 jobs so far with no success. I doubt I find one before the election because everyone is afraid to hire because of the uncertainty, and with Obamacare looming, I don't blame them. If Obama is re-elected I am afraid my goose is cooked along with millions of others in the same shape that I am. It's not my nature to seek handouts, so applying for disabilty, social security, etc. is not an option for me, as long as I know that I have the skills to perform a job well. All I can say is damn that. We must defeat Obama. There is no other choice.

You’re going to have to work smart and make your own job. Don’t depend on someone else to hire you. Maybe some of their former clients like your work???

Unemployment comp and social security are not handouts. You paid for them. Take them if you need them.

And if it won’t make you hurl to consider it, take a job with a federal contractor or with state or federal government. They’re required to hire a certain number of disabled people and over-60 employees. You will help them kill two birds with one stone.

don’t know how mobile you are. A friend buys used blue jeans at Goodwill and second hand store and sells them on Ebay. Most sales are out of the country, but shipping cost is figured in. She’s been doing it for two years. Last year she made twice as much as she did in the job she had previously.

Look around. There are options.

I am a 62 year old engineer who is wheelchair bound. I just got laid off from my job . . .

1. You are legally and morally entitled to Social Security, to the extent that you paid into that Ponzi scheme as an involuntary pension fund. I plan to draw on it when I retire, and you're not a moocher if you do so in this situation. Total up how much you have "invested" in that program - they'll send you the information if you request it http://www.ssa.gov/mystatement/ . You'll feel better about getting some of your money back, and that's (in my opinion) the right moral decision for you to make. You can always moderate that choice by determining a fair return on your investment and comparing what you (and your employer in lieu of paying the money to you) paid in plus interest with what you are drawing out.

2. By identifying as an engineer, you've just implied that you are intelligent, hard-working, and methodical. Considering that the survival of our country is at stake in this election, and the skills found in most engineers can be helpful in political campaigns, there is probably a natural solution to the twin problems of the 2012 election and no job to use up your time. I'm a professional pollster (you might have guessed from my screen name), and I'm spending this year focused on what I can do to improve the overall election outcome rather than just on my income from consulting to support random people who hire me.

Most of the job apps I have put in are with government jobs here in Huntsville, Alabama, since they are plentiful here. Apparently they are not hiring from the private sector at the moment. The jobs, I think, are being taken by people moving around within the government domain. A government position is not my first choice, but in my condition the benefits are worth more to me than the money. I am not discouraged, but I am more than a little pissed that this administration has screwed with the economic situation until everyone is afraid to hire. I think that if he is defeated in November that things will change overnight, like flowers springing to life with the rise of the morning sun. Well that depends on how Romney would govern, but I think it would get us out of the dark and back into sunlight.

If you are a PE you can definitly make your own work. I find that working for myself to be quite rewarding. It gives me opportunities that I would never have working for someone else. And since you do not like the idea of being on the government dole why do you want to be on someone elses dole - ie. a worker bee who just gets a paycheck while working towards a pink slip?
Some people say to me that they don’t have what it takes to run their own business. I say they just haven’t found that part of themselves that can.
Good Luck and Godspeed.

My FRiend, these are NOT handouts.

You paid into SSI and disability INSURANCE as well as unemployment INSURANCE.

If your car was rear-ended by an uninsured motorist, would you refuse repairs even though you paid your insurance premiums?

Social Security (and derivatives) may be a ponzi scheme, but for the moment that isn’t your row to how. Likewise, getting back what you invested in insurance programs.

These benefits are YOURS — bought and paid for.

Take them — it isn’t welfare.

I’m a 50 year old unemployed engineer. I’m going to work one more year as an assistant teacher, then I’ll be eligible for State Retirement. I’m going to get my time in, then look for engineering work in the Dakotas, or even in the oilfields in Canada. I have a Petroleum Engineering degree, but most of my experience is in Civil, mainly Geotechnical Engineering and Highway work. I have experience with the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA), as well as have a Class One Concrete Technician’s certificate. If I can get a job in either Petroleum or Civil, that’d be fine with me.

Ottbmare is 100% correct!

Think of it this way. Suppose you have a home insurance policy. Every year you pay the premiums. It would be wrong of you to file a claim if your home was not really damaged. But if you really had damage, you would not hesitate to file a claim. That's what insurance is for.

The same applies here.

Good advice on both counts. We sometimes forget that we have paid into disability, and we have no idea how much we paid into SS because we forget that the employer pays the disability and half of the SS. Everyone’s paycheck is lighter so that the employer can pay those premiums.

Federal contractors will be looking for such skills and status. Move quickly, sequestration may bring it all to a screeching halt.

I certainly understand that. It's the American way. Or at least it used to be. But please consider this. There are handouts, and then there is insurance. Social security, disability, and unemployment benefits are all forms of insurance. They are NOT handouts. You have paid (mandatory) premiums for all of them over the years.

Would you think less of a neighbor who filed a legitimate insurance claim after his house was damaged in a storm?

Same applies here!

Obama was so concerned with the handicapped that he placed a tax on the manufacturers of products for the handicapped.

My favorite part of the "affordable care act," which Pelosi, Reid, and Obama sold as bringing down the cost of medical care (though they depended on nobody actually reading the text of the act) was adding taxes to all sorts of medical devices, like implants, pacemakers, etc. So this act was going to bring down the cost of medical care by making medical procedures more expensive.

“Unemployment comp and social security are not handouts. You paid for them.”

You bet you paid for them. And you paid for Medicare and Medicaid. Add up all of those deductions from your paychecks over your lifetime, and you’ll see exactly how much you paid.

If you had a house fire or auto wreck you wouldn’t refuse the proceeds of the insurance you paid for in those cases, so you shouldn’t refuse the insurance proceeds you paid for in this case. And besides, most likely you lost your job in the first place due the deliberately destructive economic policies of the Obammunists, Progressives, and other assorted Communists. Don’t let them make you destitute as well.

Hell, with social security, you’ll probably never get back as much as you paid in anyway. Just think where you would be if you had been able to sock all of those social security payments into a private pension that benefited only you and yours, instead of having the federal government steal it from you.

Remember if you file for SS at 62, you will get the lowest payment, and that amount never goes up unless Congress approves COLAs. In other words, you can’t file at 62, withdraw at 63, and then refile at 68.

Right. I was laid off at 59, after 35 years with my employer and had 9 months before my pension would begin. It was lean times living on zero income until then.

Employer kept me listed as “unpaid leave of absence” until age 60 and full medical until age 65, when Medicare would kick in. That was done to avoid lawsuit.

I elected to take SS at 62, after over 40 years of paying into the scheme. ....Statistics and my own obversations of long-time co-workers indicated that people that try to hold off on SS until age 67 to get more $$ per month DON’T get back as much as those who go SS at 62, because they die sooner. ...........I’ll be 70 in August.

Your course of action should depend on your financial circumstances. If you need to begin generating revenue quickly then I suggest you start buying and selling on eBay and possibly on Craig's List (for local purchases of larger items where you won't be competing with those who would be shipping cross country). (If I started doing that tomorrow what I would choose to buy and see is collectible knives.)

You could also consider moving outside the profession. It might not pay as much, but it might be more interesting (somebody previously mentioned teaching - which is a good example).

If you have the luxury of time and want to stay very much in the profession then consider brokering projects to offshore engineering firms (I do a bit of this and always take a 15% commission). Also, you could write a book and publish it electronically on Amazon (I've personally purchased a couple of short 50-page technology books from Amazon lately that cover specialized topics).

One great cosmic truth, however, is that recessions are really murder for engineers in particular - and the concensus seems to be that we're in for a double dip recession.
