Record store posts the ultimate “Do Not Never Ever Buy List”
The Daily Dot ^ | 7/17/12

Posted on 07/27/2012 3:18:18 PM PDT by GSWarrior

If you’re looking to get rid of your Korn, K.D. Lang, or Eagles records, don’t expect to unload them at Laurie’s Planet of Sound.

The Chicago record store made its tastes public by posting its “The Do Not Never Ever Buy List” of used albums on its Facebook page.

“It’s a legit list,” Nick Myers, Laurie’s manager, told the Daily Dot. “That was stuff that had been here for a year or two, titles or artists we can’t sell. It’s not our own personal taste.”

Myers acknowledged that despite the list’s functionality, it’s also a great compilation of music acts to snarkily thumb one’s nose at. “It was put up [online] as kind of a lark,” he said.

The photo reportedly made it to Facebook after being Instagrammed by an employee. Unsurprisingly, it’s garnered plenty of debate from Facebook’s amateur music critics.

“no journey?” asked Nikolai Nikitenko. “disturbed and korn? someone has bad taste.”

But other users were on board.

“I totally agree with The Eagles being on there twice,” Eric Allen wrote.

**Hanna Montana not on the list? Britney Spears???**

I would think that this list would vary from city to city. My guess would be nobody in Chicago owns a Hanna Montana or a Britney Spears CD to try to sell.

This is a good study on what people buy. It has to be music that few people saved, that does not suck, and the original release. So they say no 60s or 70s if it’s on CDs made in the 90’s.

Plus no 90’s bands. The whole decade is lost. No second tier Hip-Hop, like the clerk would know. No sappy soundtracks, lol.

With all the changes in the MSM, isn’t it time to update the list? Better safe than sorry.

Personally, I think that a JAVA gizmo on the submission page or even as a separate page might be the way to go. That is, paste the link in a box, click a button, and it would tell you whether the link is good to go, or what restrictions are on it, based on its domain name or IP number.

Something like the “Down for Everyone or just Me?” site.

http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

A gizmo like that might even be good so that everyone could easily check in-thread links before posting follow up messages.

Well, how many thousand Eagles things are out there that someone hopes to get rid of, but are probably not worth 50 cents? The more popular, the more sold at the time, the less value now. It shouldn’t be that hard to understand.

They could do this list one better by making it official.

Make a list of artists that are marginal or low resale value, along with those that nobody is buying, and put it online so that a quick check can tell someone if it is worth it to bring in their old disks for sale or trade.

It would save a lot of time and unhappiness if they knew their stuff was worthless, so didn’t have to be told that by an employee.

No, it totally sucked!! If you ever needed contrast to show you good and bad, this is it. It’s her and Roy - Roy’s song. He knew what to do with it. The most amazing thing was watching them together, Roy did his usual low key thing - that was just him, he had the most amazing voice and it floated out of him. Then you see her, and the histrionics overtake her - just to try to keep up with Roy who’s all so casual about it.

No different than Half-price Books. If a book is a zillion seller, or something nobody would purchase, they're not going to give you much or sometimes any money for your wares.

For some reason they do seem to have a lot of 2004 "almanacs" for sale though. Who even buys these new?

That list is all about what they can resell.

Some of it doesn’t sell because, well, because it is crap.

But lets take the Eagles for example:

The people who like the Eagles are all older now, and you can bet they already HAVE all the Eagles albums in Vinyl and/or CD.

The same thing is probably true of Journey, Kiss, Foreigner, and John Mellencamp. They are all from a generation that probably already owns all the albums they are going to buy.

In other words, being on the list doesn’t necessarily mean they suck, just that they don’t sell anymore.
