A Louisiana fortune teller feels vindicated after a federal judge struck down a city ordinance that banned fortunetelling, palm reading and astrology within the city limits of Alexandria.

U.S. District Judge Dee Drell’s ruling Wednesday coincides with a magistrate’s findings that Alexandria’s city ordinance prohibiting such practices was unconstitutional in that it infringed on the First Amendment right to free speech.

The ordinance itself not only prohibited psychic or Tarot reading for pay, it stated that it was unlawful…

“… for any person to engage in the business or practice of palmistry, card reading, astrology, fortunetelling, phrenology, mediums or activities of a similar nature within the city, regardless of whether a fee is charged directly or indirectly, or whether the services are rendered without a charge.”

Rachel Adams, a fifth-generation psychic told the Associated Press that she did not charge for her services but accepts donations instead.

Well, then. Let the astrologists be their salvation when it’s all over. Thanks, SC, thanks for Obamacare, btw. /s

Isaiah 47:12-14

King James Version (KJV)

12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

They used to run sting operations and bust them for fraud.

Ok, don’t ban fortunetelling, just make them prove that their forecasts are accurate. Otherwise, charge them with fraud and lock them up.

You could also open themselves up to civil lawsuits by people who relied on their advice!

Drell was the Head of the Witch's Counsel on Sabrina the The Teenage Witch.

Given the Promotion to I'm not surprised at the Ruling.

Shouldn’t have outlawed them, because to courts that sounds like religious persecution.

Instead they should have required them to be licensed, to include all sorts of regulations, such as limiting how much they can charge, posted disclaimer signs that this is for “entertainment purposes only”, and strict zoning requirements for fire safety, parking, hours, and limits to where they can set up in proximity to schools, liquor stores, etc.

The typical fortuneteller would take one look at that and keep moving to the next town.

I’m sure the psychics weren’t worried. They knew they would win.

Bad news. Being able to legally combat these fraudsters is a potent weapon in any town’s arsenal in the fight to stop the slide into decay.

Because these charlatans inevitably attract decay.

They’re almost, but not quite as bad, as “medical” marijuana dispensaries for destroying perfectly nice business districts and generally wreaking havoc.

Watch what happens to any business district when criminal fraud psychics hang out their shingles.

Oh, but we’re supposed to just shut up and sit down and respect the criminals’ rights.
