The role was initially supposed to go to Mads Mikkelsen, but with the Danish star unavailable thanks to his leading role on TV's Hannibal, word is now out that Christopher Eccleston has been tapped to take on the part of Malekith The Accursed in the upcoming Thor 2.

The leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, Malekith is one of Thor's major opponents in the comic books and it would appear the part is in good hands with Eccleston. Though most known recently for his stint as Doctor Who, Eccelston has a long, long list of stellar performances in intense parts to his credit, and his addition to any film is generally a good thing.

One of the better Doctor Who crossovers was Tom Baker, who played the evil wizard in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.

I’m jazzed about this casting. I love the strange, almost dark energy he brought to Who. Looking forward to this flick.
