CARDIFF, Wales — If the sight of a unified Britain football team competing in its first Olympics since 1960 took football fans in the host nation by surprise, the manner of the its exit surely didn’t.

Like so many England teams before it, the British side lost in a quarterfinal penalty shootout on Saturday night, meaning South Korea will advance to its first Olympic semifinal, where it will meet tournament favorite Brazil.

Do the English ever lose any way BUT on penalties? They’ve made choking on PKs into an art form over there.

Penalty kicks as tie breakers

One of many reasons why soccer is a stupid game.

Can you image basketball deciding games by freethrows or baseball by doing a Home run derby.

Yes, because making them just play and play and play til one exhausted guy managed to sneak a ball past another exhausted guy is the kind of quality athleticism I wanna stay up late to see.

To the Brit coaches.....

You’re telling me that Beckham wasn’t better than one of the Brits on that roster. I find that hard to believe after watching the lack of offensive output and creativity.

...or was it because he dared to leave Euro and play in the American MLS?

I wasn’t a big Beckham supporter for the UK team (really didn’t care much either way, actually). But after watching the UK team, especially the over 23 “ringers”, I can’t see how he wasn’t selected. For his ability on free kicks/set pieces if nothing else....
