Vanity...Advice on GPS software
None | Me/ vanity

Posted on 08/07/2012 8:28:00 PM PDT by The_Sword_of_Groo

Good evening friends. I recently received a gift of a Garmin GPS 60CSx to replace my old model-t Magellan handheld unit which finally went toes up last week while on a fishing trip. It seems to be a good unit, perhaps a bit more complicated than I am used to. I was wondering if someone could recommend Mac compatible topographic map/software. It doesn't have to have tons of bells and whistles...it will be used primarily to mark spots for duck hunting, deer stands, fishing, etc. Thanks in advance for advice

I should add that the unit did not come with a disk. Originally I was going to order the Garmin disk but I read in several geocaching forums that the factory software/maps were inferior to some of the 3rd party maps.

“I should add that the unit did not come with a disk.”

Garman normally provides downloads to update maps etc. Depending on what you bought.

GarmaN is undoubtedly the best GPS...but some Garman’s are better than others. Military GPS has been Garman, pretty much from the get-go. I will use only Garman. They are accurate. To within a baseball diamond.

So THAT'S what I'm doing wrong!
lol, yes I have the coordinates from the old unit written in a notebook. Of course, if you want to add a few I will be glad to try them out for you...

For many decades, I’ve taken my boat out in the ocean in search of good fishing areas. Before GPS, I’d triangulate landmarks onshore, which mmeant I could only go out a few miles. GPS is a life and timesaver. I use it hunting in the mountains too.

The unit was purchased by my wife from a member of our Sunday school class. For some reason he didnt want/ need it. The disk and cables were lost somewhere along the way.

To answer your actual question, take a look at Garmin Mapsource - various options.

Garmin has free (and otherwise) software for it here:

Garmin’s free BaseCamp is what, I think, you are looking for.

Also, here are all of Garmin’s Mac software options. Most are free.

The cable that you need is the standard USB A-to-Mini-B one so popular for digital cameras, pocket hard drives, etc., etc. Cheaply and commonly available.

If your real name is actually BUBBA and you fish in your native state of Georgia, I can see why you need a GPS. I heard the story about you, as related to me by your friend JUNIOR:

It seems that you and Junior went out in the Okefenokee Swamp to catch some catfish. You guys rented a boat and motor at the Alligator Fish Camp & Lodge on the eastern edge of the swamp. There were about 15 available to rent so you just picked one out.

You went out and BAM....found a new honey hole and loaded the boat with cats. When it was time to leave, you told Junior to mark the spot so you could find it next time. Junior said "OK".

An hour later you guys were back at the Camp and turned it the boat. On the way home, while tipping a couple of beers, you asked Junior if he marked the honey hole, to which he replied: "Yep....sure did. I MARKED IT ON THE SIDE OF THE BOAT."

You slammed on the brakes and the truck came to a screeching stop and you screamed at Junior: "You did what??? !!! ??? Junior, you are the dumbest idiot I ever knew !! What the hell are we going to do if we don't get the SAME BOAT next time?"

Yeppers...HERE'S YOUR SIGN, BUBBA. (it reads: get a GPS.)

Not sure if that was intended as humor or condescension, but it surely was a stretch. how long you been sitting on that one waiting for an opportunity to use it? How long has HeeHaw been off the air exactly?

Finding fish in the Oke doesnt require a GPS. Finding your way out does. Assuming, of course you don't pass out first from blood loss courtesy of the yellow flies. Besides, anyone who has ever fished there knows its nearly impossible to land a fighting fish as the alligators will remove it from the end of your line.

Thanks to all for input and messages.

Geeeze....lets call it humor. To think it was something besides that would be ....uh....um...uh.... humorous. I've heard it off and on for at least 30 years and no doubt repeated it a dozen times. It always got a laugh. Of course it "surely was a stretch"....there was no GPS 30 years ago.. DUH : )! Since it was always a Louisiana Cajun story, BUBBA and JUNIOR are usually named BOUDREAU and THIBODEAU.

By the way, did you ever hear about when ROBICHAU and GUILBAUT went deer hunting over in Opelousas? I'll tell you, but first, let me tell you what LANOUE did when he heard his wife was having an affair with his best friend AUCOIN? Well....it seems that EUNICE-MADALEENE was in this bar up in Ville Platte on a Saturday night and ....... Naw....you probably already heard about it.

I have heard many, B and T stories over the years....one of my best friends grew up in Abita Springs. He's been gone a long time but if the Andy Gator flows just right he has acute episodic reversions to LA-speak and loves to tell those jokes. He tells one that I cant remember (or decipher) that ends with the punchline " That dog can't swim" He is usually laughing by himself but he loves to tell the joke.

Incidentally, I assumed you were joking. I was jabbing back. I forget sometimes my humor doesn't translate into the typed word.

the info I added about the Oke is true though. If you go fish there take 2 L of whole blood to replenish what the yellow flies will take from you...bugs there are as bad as Alaska. No exaggeration.

You should hear some of the stories my mama, Mary Adale, used to tell when she was a striper at Jacques Kit Kat Klub in Shreveport. If you ever hung out there, you may know her. Her maiden name was Gautreaux, but she married a shrimper out of Houma named Quebodeaux. Because she couldn't spell Quebodeaux, she just changed her name to Smith to make everything easier.

Got to run. Have a few things to do....leaving for Waycross after while. Meeting my buddies Bubba and Junior there. We're going to drop down to the Camp and rent a boat early in the morning. Heard the bluegill are stacked up in 4 foot water.
